About the role

Coast Underwriters is looking for an Intermediate Commercial Marine Underwriter to join our growing team

This is a hybrid opportunity based out of our office in Downtown Toronto.

What you'll do here:

  • Accept, reject, endorse, renew or cancel policies following Coast's underwriting guidelines and procedures, applicable laws and regulations and subject to authority level as specified by underwriting manager.
  • Focus on sustainable profitable growth
  • Analyze requests for quotes, renewals and policy changes, and recommend solutions
  • Support brokers regarding underwriting and rating policies
  • Use effective communication and negotiating skills to maintain healthy relationships within and outside the company
  • Respond to broker requests and concerns in a timely manner
  • Participate in broker visits, industry functions and marketing events
  • Rate and prepare quotes for new business and renewals
  • Handle policy transactions including renewals, endorsements and cancellations.
  • Support team members within Coast Underwriters as well as other divisions at Intact
  • Maintain great relationships with brokers and travel for meeting as required


What you bring to the table:

  • University degree/College diploma or any combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience. Prior Marine experience is a desirable asset.
  • Strong customer service and time management skills
  • Demonstrate initiative, ability to work under pressure and flexibility to change
  • Team player possessing outstanding collaboration and communication skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent relationships with brokers
  • Inquisitive, analytical and self-motivated individual
  • Ability to make decisions in time sensitive situations, address complex problems, provide recommended course of action and take calculated risks
  • Interested in and stay up to date on business trends or other developments impacting our industry
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • CIP designation or working towards designation
  • No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.
