Reporting to the Director of Professional Practice, the Practice Leader, APN is an expert Clinical Nurse Specialist who provides programmatic and individual support to CNS in the oncology, BDP and Genetics programs at the University Health Network (UHN). Through this role, the Practice Leader provides strategic and practice leadership to sustain, enhance, and ensure excellence in CNS practice. This role facilitates the continuing development of structures, systems, and resources to both retain CNS as well as advance their individual and collective professional practice. The APN-PL role will advance role clarity, while building and supporting collaborative relationships. The role collaborates with leadership and professional staff to ensure the integration of practice standards, policies, role design and utilization, resource planning and professional development.

The APN lead will collaborate with the DPP to implement evidence based onboarding and continuing education programs for the CNS to ensure application of practice standards. The APN lead will act as a resource for staff, mentor and coach and ensure integration of collaborative, patient-centered care into daily practice which align with the strategic directions of UHN.

The APN lead will lead and/or participate in the development of new APN roles and APN led programs based on programmatic and patient care needs.

Qualifications
  • Completion of Master's Degree required
  • 5 or more years of experience in a clinical nurse specialist role required
  • Current registration with College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Cross appointment with a UHN affiliated College or University preferred
  • A minimum of five years demonstrated 5 years supervisory or leadership experience preferred
  • Experience in developing, implementing and maintaining professional practice standards and quality control measures in a health care environment required
  • Project Management experience preferred
  • Consulting, influencing and negotiating skills
  • Ability to think strategically at the global organizational level, as well as at the program, site, unit and individual levels
  • Broad knowledge of overall hospital structure, operating policies and decision making processes
  • Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act, standards of professional practice and codes of ethics, health care consent and ethical implications of care delivery as well as evolving scopes of practice
  • Knowledge of computer systems and various software applications
  • Broad understanding of the health care system, related issues and trends, policies and legislation provincially, nationally and internationally
  • Excellent knowledge of quality improvement principles and practices
  • Excellent problem recognition, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent judgment and decision making skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse management and employee groups and individuals
  • Ability to adapt to change and to implement and manage change and facilitate its acceptance by others
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in new environments and culturally sensitive situations
