The Cenovus team is looking for a Senior Advisor, Turnaround Project Controls to join our team

Reporting to the Manager, Maintenance & Reliability Costing, this position will play a crucial role in ensuring the successful execution of turnaround projects by implementing robust project controls strategies. This position requires a strong background in project management, cost control, scheduling, and risk management within the industrial sector.

The Senior Advisor, Turnaround Project Controls is accountable to lead and manage project control reporting for the annual turnaround process and facilitate the Planning, Preparation, Execution, and Post-turnaround phases of the process that are defined in the Turnaround Plan-to-Plan.

What you'll do:

  • Develop comprehensive project controls plans tailored to specific turnaround projects, outlining strategies for cost estimation, scheduling, progress tracking, and risk management.
  • Support the development of TAR specific landmarks in line with the Plan to Plan.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather accurate cost data and provide detailed cost estimates for turnaround projects.
  • Monitor and analyze cost variances, providing timely reports and recommendations to optimize project budget management.
  • Implement and maintain project cost tracking tools to monitor budget, forecast, incurred costs and actuals.
  • Manage monthly cost reports, spend profiles, change management, schedules and accruals and other related deliverables.
  • Coordinate with turnaround scheduling on scope management, asset management and activity planning and resource loading
  • Assist iSTO, Cost and Turnaround teams in developing yearly/multi-year long range maintenance plans, and annual budgeting exercises.
  • Develop and implement effective change management processes to address any modification to project scope, schedule, or budget.
  • Work closely with the project teams to evaluate the impact of changes and adjust project controls strategies accordingly.
  • Implement robust progress tracking mechanisms to monitor the execution of turnaround activities against the established schedule.
  • Generate regular progress reports, highlighting key achievements, challenges, and recommended corrective actions.
  • Complete readiness assessments for project controls landmarks within the plan-to-plan process.
  • Collaborate with vendors and contractors to ensure alignment with project controls tracking standards and expectations.
  • Evaluate vendor performance and contribute insights to vendor selection process.
  • Quantify risks and opportunities for turnaround projects while also identifying potential risks and support in the development of mitigation plans as required.
  • Define and track key performance indicators related to project controls, evaluating project performance against established benchmarks.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance project controls effectiveness.
  • Communicate project controls strategies and updates effectively to internal and external partners, fostering transparency and collaboration.
  • Collaborate with field execution, event managers, engineers, and other team members to align project controls with overall project goals.
  • May be required to complete tasks and responsibilities not listed in this job description.
  • Travel to site up to 25% is required.

Who you are:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering, project management, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in project controls, specifically in the management of turnaround events.
  • Proficiency in project management software, cost estimation tools, and scheduling software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional MS Excel and data management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Project Management Professional - PMP, Maintenance Management Professional - MMP) are a plus.
