Job Summary

This role is the lead in providing strategic and tactical advice on the operation and optimization of the distribution system. It involves analyzing reliability and economic optimization of operating configurations, developing contingency plans for system operations, and providing real-time review of operating constraints for switching and loading activities in daily operation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the development and implementation of major capital projects related to distribution system optimization.
  • Provide input into required capital programs for reliability and constraint amelioration.
  • Conduct failure investigations and reports to identify root causes and ramifications on classes of assets.
  • Analyze outage information to determine root cause and impact on system performance.
  • Assess system performance and support performance reporting activities.
  • Support the generation of reliability index information.
  • Develop and document substation and distribution system contingency plans.
  • Identify constraints within the system, including transmission, station, and distribution constraints.
  • Allocate new load to appropriate circuits.
  • Perform protection coordination studies initiated by stations upgrades or coordination failures.
  • Conduct short circuit calculations and load flows for system optimization, including voltage profiles.
  • Assess the impact of distributed energy resources connections on the distribution system.
  • Ensure accurate data capture on system loads and equipment ratings.
  • Set operating limits and standards for distribution system elements.
  • Provide input during the development of technical engineering standards.
  • Represent Hydro Ottawa at external working groups and conferences.
  • Participate in special projects as required.
Requirements
  • Professional Engineer, licensed or able to be licensed in the province of Ontario.
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Experience in a utility environment is considered an asset.
  • Project Management and System Planning experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience with Asset Management models is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of ISO55000 is considered an asset.
  • Strong computer skills, proficient in the use of office productivity and collaboration tools, preferably G Suite.
Additional Requirements
  • English is essential, both oral and written; Bilingual (French/English) or other languages are considered an asset.
  • Valid driver's license - Class G.
