About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Applied Scientist to join our Alexa Daily Essentials team at Amazon. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for leading groundbreaking innovations in large language models to enhance Alexa's language understanding, knowledge representation, reasoning, and generation capabilities.

This is a high-impact role that offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of Alexa AI. You will work closely with our engineering, product, and user experience teams to integrate your science breakthroughs into the Alexa ecosystem.

The Alexa Daily Essentials team delivers experiences critical to how customers interact with Alexa as part of daily life. We drive over 40 billion+ actions annually across 60 million+ monthly customers, who engage with our products across experiences connected to Timers, Alarms, Calendars, Food, and News.

Our experiences include critical time-saving techniques, ad-supported news audio and video, and in-depth kitchen guidance aimed at serving the needs of the family from sunset to sundown.

As a senior Applied Scientist, you will bring deep expertise to lead innovation in AI. You will work with complete autonomy to transform your vision into high-impact results. You will mentor and guide a team of junior scientists, and help them navigate challenges.

You will also collaborate across teams, determine strategic directions, establish technical excellence, and guide the team in a fast-paced and ever-changing landscape.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead projects where you and your team rapidly prototype and deliver ML/LLM solutions to Alexa users.
  • Lead and deliver high-impact research projects focused on advancing LLM capabilities in areas like model latency, multimodel systems, personalization, and reasoning.
  • Define and establish LLM best practices and operational excellence for both science and engineering teams across the organization.
  • Work closely with engineering, product, and user experience teams to integrate your science breakthroughs into the Alexa ecosystem.
  • Guide and mentor junior scientists and engineers to foster a culture of inclusion, innovation, technical excellence, and continuous learning.
  • Publish in top-tier conferences and journals to establish our reputation as a leader in AI research.
  • Contribute to the development of the organization's AI strategy, keeping up-to-date on emerging trends and opportunities for differentiation in the AI landscape.
Requirements
  • 6+ years of building machine learning models for business application experience.
  • PhD, or Master's degree and 6+ years of applied research experience.
  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python, or related languages.
  • Experience with neural deep learning methods and machine learning.
  • Experience with conducting research in a corporate setting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with modeling tools such as R, scikit-learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, TensorFlow, NumPy, SciPy, etc.
  • Experience in building speech recognition, machine translation, and natural language processing systems (e.g., commercial speech products or government speech projects).

Compensation

The base salary for this position ranges from $195,900/year up to $327,200/year. Salary is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
