Cultural Immersion School Language Teacher

About the RoleThe Language Teacher is responsible for instructing elementary students (K5-G7) and school staff in the nsyilxwcən language and cultural ways of the sqilxw/sylix people. The position aims to strengthen children's sense of identity, culture, and history.
Key Responsibilities- Provide language instruction for the school, including whole class and small groups, using a variety of strategies.
- Oversee the development of a nsyilxwcən language curriculum, rooted in traditional sqilxw cultural practices and knowledge.
- Share cultural knowledge and provide cultural experiences and activities for the school, whole class, and small group.
- Develop and implement language and culture units and daily lesson plans in consultation with a designated Classroom Teacher.
- Coordinate field trips to support language and culture learning in consultation with the Vice Principal.
- Develop teaching resources in collaboration with the Language and Culture team and other school staff.
- Identify opportunities to integrate language and culture into all aspects of classroom and land-based learning.
- Ensure there are samples of the Okanagan language throughout the school.
- Assist in managing classroom expectations and practicing respectful student/adult interactions.
- Participate in the preparation of the school annual calendar and attend workshops, seminars, and conferences to stay informed of current trends in education.
- Provide daily language instruction to school staff in supporting their learning and on-going use of Okanagan language skills.
- Prepare student assessments in language and culture learning.
- Maintain records related to student progress and evaluate student learning.
- Provide data to Classroom Teachers for reporting purposes and review CT reports for feedback.
- Set expectations and provide reminders for student behavior using the 5 Guiding Principles.
- Communicate and collaborate with Classroom Teachers to address classroom management.
- Maintain confidentiality of all matters relating to students and families.
- Coordinate and set up the Language and Culture workspace each day.
- Meet regularly with the Language and Culture planning team for language planning and unit development.
- BC Teacher Certification and/or independent school teacher certificate and/or equivalent, including Bachelor in nsyilxwcən Language Fluency.
- Intermediate or better fluency in the nsyilxwcən language, both oral and written.
- Knowledge of traditional Okanagan cultural practices and protocols.
- Familiarity with a variety of language immersion delivery strategies and methods.
- Computer and technology skills an asset.
- Experience teaching or mentoring learners in a multi-level learning environment.
