The opportunity

The Power System Analyst, as part of the Real-time Application team, is accountable for performing duties related to specific phases of work in the coordination and management of network model builds in support of the reliable operation of the IESO controlled grid and the IESO administered markets.

This position requires in-depth knowledge of network model update process and power system modeling, with emphasis on EMS networks and on-line applications, including the following items:

  • Demonstrated ability in the maintenance of power system models.
  • Good knowledge of EMS applications.
  • Good knowledge of the operation of the IESO controlled grid and IESO administered markets.
  • Good knowledge of Market Rules.
  • Analytical studies and the application of computer techniques to solve power system problems
  • Provincial operating and system requirements.
  • Particulars of power system operation, including technical features of equipment and facilities, high-tension transmission, system interconnection and methods of attaining efficiency in power production and interchange between systems.
  • Requires experience in python and SQL programming.
  • An attention to detail with a focus on accuracy.

What you'll be doing

  • Coordinating the network model build process and provide power system data to IT&I.
  • Maintaining on-line network models in support of Energy Management System (EMS)applications.
  • Developing power system models used in system monitoring and analysis.
  • Review technical reports to determine and plan future system changes.
  • Interfacing with other business units and/or market participants to collect and verify equipment models and data for the registered facilities.
  • Performing EMS and Market Information System (MIS) studies to resolve trouble reports and technical issues.
  • Automate work steps using Python and SQL.
  • Performing QA tests at every on-line network update to ensure the accuracy of the network changes and performance of security applications.
  • Writing specifications for EMS/MIS software enhancements.
  • Performing other duties as required.

In addition to the specific duties listed above, this position exists across multiple areas in Market and System Operations, with materially similar accountabilities and skill requirements.

  • Assist in technical studies and analysis to resolve inquiries and support real-time operations, operations planning or planning functions through analysis and application of highly specialized technology in the field of power system operation in areas that may include:
    • Operating Security Limits (all time frames);
    • transfer capability;
    • outage (transmission and resource) assessment and support;
    • transmission services;
    • ancillary service requirements;
    • supply adequacy, security and operability;
    • joint operating and/or planning studies;
    • inter-area activities;
    • new or modified power system facilities and connections to the IESO-controlled grid;
    • NERC/NPCC reliability standards compliance and support;
    • executing the Day Ahead commitment process;
    • equipment performance and model validation;
    • developing online and off-line development security models used by security and market software;
    • support the development of the real time operating plan; or,
    • assisting with support of real-time operations use of operating instructions and the accuracy of security software results.
    • Receive assignment from the Sr Power System Engineer, Engineering Supervisor, Engineering Manager, and/or Senior Manager in detail on specific problems related to assigned areas of work.

What you need to succeed

Education:

  • Requires engineering knowledge of electrical theory, power system analysis and control, mathematics, computers science and the like to carry out engineering, economic or analytical studies related to the management and control of the bulk power system. Requires knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports.
  • This knowledge is acquired through the completion of an engineering/applied sciences degree from an accredited university or by having the equivalent education.
  • Must be able to obtain a professional engineering license from Professional Engineers Ontario within a reasonable period of time, with a competency in the field of electrical engineering

Experience:

  • Requires experience such as might be gained in the energy industry to become familiar with the general system operation, organizational structure to establish a broad base of contacts.
  • Requires experience to become familiar with the nature of studies and investigations carried out by the different sections and groups of the organization.
  • Requires further on the job experience to become familiar with methods and practices associated with the work functions.
  • A period of over 4 years and up to and including 6 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
