The purpose of the On Call Early Childhood Educator is to provide a solid and safe foundation for the children which fosters their physical, intellectual, emotional, social, creative and very necessary cultural development as an individual and as a member of a group. It is important to value the contributions and needs of the parents and to work in partnership with them in providing care and education.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and prepare a quality program based on the centre's philosophy
- Plan, organize and lead daily activities designed to stimulate the intellectual, physical and emotional growth of children
- Encourage cooperation and participation of all children in planned activities
- Create a safe and secure environment
- Liaise with co-workers and other professionals to meet the needs of the children
- Treat each child with dignity, respect, love, sensitivity and care
- Use guidance techniques that are age-appropriate, fair, and encourage socially acceptable behaviour
- Adhere to the B.C. Childcare Licensing Regulations
- Observe for signs of ill health upon arrival and throughout the day
- Monitor and record signs and symptoms of ill health and inform the Room Supervisor
- Implement the scheduled housekeeping duties
- Ensure hazardous materials and products are stored and locked in a safe place
- Teach health and nutrition, rest habits and personal hygiene
- Maintain hygiene practices
- Follow the policy for administration of medication
- Administer basic First Aid as required
- Maintain constant supervision of indoor and outdoor play
- Maintain a positive liaison with parents
- Encourage open communication with parents concerning the needs and progress of their child
- Respond to questions concerning policies
- Contribute to the monthly parent newsletter
- Participate in the planning and implementing of special events, workshops and meetings for parents
- Act as a resource person
- Attend centre staff meetings
- Ensure weekly timesheets are completed
- Maintains up to date records concerning individual children, attendance, child observations, etc.
- Communicate to the Daycare Manager any pertinent information regarding children, parents, staff, program, etc.
- Write parent handouts
- Be informed of current trends in the ECE field
- Abide by the Personnel Policy and Procedure Manual of the Okanagan Indian Band
- Abide by the Early Childhood Educators of B.C. Code of Ethics
- Work cooperatively and show respect for all other centre staff and programs
- Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the OKIB policies and procedures
- Participate in community events as requested
Requirements:
- Early Childhood Educator Certification or Diploma
- Current First Aid Certificate as per Schedule C of the Childcare Licensing Regulations
- Approved with a Certificate from the BC Childcare Registry to work as an ECE Educator
- Experience working with children under the age of six, preferably in a daycare centre
- Experience working with First Nations communities is an asset
- Valid BC driver's license, class 5 and reliable vehicle
- Criminal records check with vulnerable sector clearance
