Join our St. Joseph's Health Centre team as we work to put patients and families at the centre of everything we do, in the role of Occupational Therapist in our Neonatal ICU (NICU) and Follow-Up Clinic.

As an integral member of the care team, the Occupational Therapist in the NICU and Follow-up Clinic is prioritizing the developmental needs of premature infants, as well as any infant in need and their families. Through specialized approaches such as infant massage, and kangaroo care, they foster sensory experiences that promote comfort and bonding. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams, they provide specialized feeding support, promote sensory integration, and champion family-centered care. Their commitment to ongoing education and advocacy ensures that each infant receives comprehensive care, laying the foundation for healthy development and lifelong well-being. Responsibilities that are specific to this patient care area include:

  • Conducting assessments to evaluate infants sensory, motor and feeding abilities
  • Developing individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
  • Assessing and addressing feeding difficulties
  • Providing recommendations to optimize developmental care practices
  • Collaborating with the interprofessional team in the development and implementation of guidelines for developmental care and feeding practices
  • Establishing collaborative relationships with parents and caregivers, providing education, support, and guidance on infant development and care practices
  • Demonstrating commitment to ongoing professional development and participate in quality improvement initiatives


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary role of an Occupational Therapist is to assess and treat patients whose occupational performance is impaired by illness or injury, social disadvantage, trauma, or the aging process. The purpose of occupational therapy is to promote, maintain, or restore health and wellbeing through engagement in meaningful occupations in the areas of self-care, productivity, and leisure. Occupational therapy services may include assessment, treatment, consultation, discharge planning, and education to patients, their family members, external agencies, and hospital staff.

  • Works effectively as a member of an interprofessional team, collaborating with other disciplines to provide comprehensive patient care
  • Contributes to the academic mandate of the organization as an educator, resource or support for staff and members of the academic and professional community
  • Identifies and addresses educational needs for patients and their families
  • Demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional development in order to continue to provide optimal patient care
  • Is committed to and participates in ongoing quality improvement and/or research in the organization
  • Provides patient care in accordance with all professional and organizational standards
  • Is committed to providing anti oppressive and accessible care for all patients


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be currently licensed by and in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario for practice in all applicable clinical areas
  • Must hold a Master's Degree (or substantial equivalent) in Occupational Therapy
  • Current BLS certificate (or willingness to complete within probationary period)
  • Experience in NICU/Paediatrics required
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking and interpersonal skills
  • Proven flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent time management, organizational and prioritization skills as relates to patient care
  • Demonstrated advocacy, commitment to and involvement with profession preferred (e.g. involvement with professional association, representation on relevant committees)
