About us:

The Bradshaw Research Institute for Minerals and Mining (BRIMM) at the University of British Columbia is a leading institution dedicated to advancing research, education, and innovation in the field of minerals and mining. BRIMM fosters collaboration between academia, industry, and communities to address complex challenges in the mining sector and promote sustainable practices.

Mine closure is a multifaceted challenge with profound implications for various stakeholders. Recognizing the evolving landscape of societal expectations and environmental responsibilities, BRIMM, in partnership with Rio Tinto, Curtin University, and Ernst & Young (EY), has developed the "Leadership in Sustainable Mine Closure" program. This micro-certificate education initiative is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective, ethical, and socially responsible mine closure. Through collaboration with industry, academia, and Indigenous communities, the program offers comprehensive modules that cover diverse perspectives and best practices in mine closure.

Job Summary

The Business Development Manager will play a crucial role in overseeing the "Leadership in Sustainable Mine Closure" program. This individual will be responsible for program management, planning, and development, ensuring its successful execution and expansion through the devising and implementation of a marketing strategy. Additionally, the Business Development Manager will collaborate with industry partners, the UBC team, and other stakeholders to drive growth, sales, marketing, and communication efforts for the program.

Organizational Status
This position reports directly to the BRIMM Director and works closely with all BRIMM and Mining Education instructors, staff, and faculty.

Work Performed

Program Management Support:

  • Manage all aspects of the Leadership in Sustainable Mine Closure program, including planning, development, and execution.
  • Collaborate with industry partners, UBC team members, and stakeholders to ensure program success and growth.
  • Engage with an industry advisory board to gather insights, feedback, and support for program enhancement.
  • Evaluate program performance, assess outcomes, and make data-driven decisions to improve effectiveness.
  • Manage program budget, finances, and resource allocation to ensure efficient operations.
  • Manage client relationships, which include the program's learners, instructors and businesses, through quality client service and data management through Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems.
  • Develop administrative and organizational processes to support the smooth functioning of the program.
  • Develop program documentation, records, and reporting for internal and external stakeholders.

Marketing Support:

  • Develop and execute multi-channel marketing campaigns to promote the program to target audiences.
  • Create compelling marketing materials, including brochures, flyers, presentations, and website content.
  • Manage social media channels, email marketing, and digital advertising efforts to generate leads and drive enrollment.
  • Conduct market research and competitor analysis to identify opportunities and refine marketing strategies.
  • Cultivate partnerships with industry associations, professional organizations, and educational institutions to expand program reach.
  • Analyze marketing metrics, such as website traffic, conversion rates, and lead generation, to optimize campaign performance.
  • Collaborate with graphic designers, copywriters, and other creative professionals to produce high-quality marketing assets.
  • Coordinate participation in industry conferences, trade shows, and networking events to increase program visibility.
  • Respond to inquiries from prospective students, partners, and media outlets in a timely and professional manner.

Education Program Support:

  • Coordinate curriculum development and updates in collaboration with subject matter experts and academic partners.
  • Facilitate instructor recruitment, training, and ongoing support.
  • With the support of the Instructional Designer at BRIMM, the Business Development Manager will support with student enrollment processes, including registration, payments, and course access.
  • Evaluate student progress, address concerns or issues, and provide feedback as needed.
  • Organize program events, workshops, and webinars to enhance participant engagement and networking opportunities.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness through student feedback, assessments, and outcome measurements.
  • Liaise with accreditation bodies or regulatory agencies to ensure program compliance and quality standards.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent in this role must exercise a high degree of confidence, autonomy, and independence while working within broad guidelines. A very high standard of professional communication is required. BC. Poor decisions or lack of tact, diplomacy, or sensitivity in dealing with industry contacts could result in missed opportunities, damaged relationships, and significant loss of credibility for BRIMM and UBC.

Supervision Received
The incumbent is empowered to execute their responsibilities and work independently under the general direction of the BRIMM Director. Work is reviewed in terms of effectiveness within established policies and guidelines.

Supervision Given
May supervise student interns from time to time, especially during UBC summer vacation.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of five years of related experience in an appropriate business specialization, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in the mining sector or related industries is a plus.
  • Master's degree in business administration, marketing, or related field.
