The Role:

Canco is seeking a driven and detail-oriented Category Manager - Buyer to support key categories for in-store operations. The right candidate will develop a deep understanding of customer needs, translating insights into a long-term strategy. This role involves selecting and purchasing quality products for our business, as well as processing purchase orders, negotiating with suppliers, tracking orders, creating and maintaining inventory, quality assurance, and liaising with inventory teams and management.

The Category Manager - Buyer will work with Canco staff across departments to forecast the needs of the business, partnering to create a cohesive assortment strategy and building out processes that will impact our customers, and support in-store procedures. These departments include finance, design, legal, store operations, and product management.

Key elements of this position include enhancing the overall customer experience, driving selection, negotiating with vendors, and creating a category pricing structure. You will have P&L ownership for your assigned categories and be responsible for driving revenue and profitability.

The Category Manager - Buyer should be analytically minded and possess excellent negotiating skills to secure the best prices, according to Canco's budget. Knowledge of sales and marketing principles is advantageous to the role.

Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for translating business and customer insights to establish a successful strategic direction for the category.
  • Initiate, structure, and negotiate partnerships with both new and existing vendors. Create business plans for new opportunities and develop and execute project plans for new launches and long-term operations.
  • Research, select, and purchase quality products and materials.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams and communicate with internal and external parties, while meeting tight deadlines.
  • This role will require a willingness to dive into the details, solve new problems as they arise, be comfortable with ambiguity, and look around corners while always keeping our customers at the forefront.
  • Ability to travel to various Canco Petroleum locations.

What You Bring:

  • Direct Buyer/Category experience (including brand, category, product management, buying, finance, and/or marketing)
  • Strong financial acumen with business analysis
  • Critical thinking and negotiating skills
  • Ability to think and act both strategically and tactically
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Suite (including Excel)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in Liquor/Grocery/Mass Convenience and/or Drug channels

This role is a Permanent Full-Time position at our Kelowna BC Head Office.
