Summary: Provide recreation therapy services to patients in an acute rehabilitation setting, leading individual and group activities, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to promote patient well-being and independence.
As a Recreation Assistant, you will be responsible for:
- Leading individual and group activities, such as arts and crafts, cooking, music, sports, games, and gardening, in consultation with the Recreation Therapist.
- Organizing necessary supplies and equipment, setting up the environment, and conducting programs.
- Monitoring and evaluating patient progress, reporting observations, and providing suggestions for change or modifications to existing programs.
- Setting up and organizing furnishings and equipment for activity programs.
- Maintaining inventory of equipment, supplies, and tools for recreation activities.
- Preparing patients for activities, assisting with personal supplies, and checking with healthcare providers for potential contradictions.
- Providing functional direction to volunteers during activity programs.
- Transporting patients on group outings, conducting pre-trip inspections, and maintaining records of distances traveled and vehicle maintenance.
- Completing required reports, attending program meetings, and carrying out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements.
- Liaising with Recreation, Aquatic, and Music Therapists to support student placements.
Requirements:
- Grade 12, completion of a Recreation Therapy Program, and two years' recent, related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Valid class 4 vehicle license (unrestricted).
Skills and Knowledge:
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to teach.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada.
- Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety.
