About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General as a Food Services Manager. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and administering the food services operation at the Toronto East Detention Centre.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and coordinate the overall kitchen and food services operations, providing technical, administrative, and operational direction to staff.
  • Manage and coordinate the food preparation, production, and delivery for the institution, ensuring timely and efficient service.
  • Oversee ordering requirements, maintain inventories of food supplies, and authorize payment of monthly billings.
  • Plan and post weekly menus using a computerized food services software, ensuring compliance with Public Health standards.
  • Establish and implement effective and efficient food preparation and production methods, ensuring a pest-free environment.
  • Conduct inspections of equipment to ensure proper and safe operation, storage, waste management, and compliance with Public Health standards.
  • Prepare and assume responsibility for the food services operating budget, ensuring effective financial management.
  • Provide supervision, direction, and training to staff and inmate helpers, promoting a values-based, inclusive, and engaged team environment.
  • Maintain data and records of meals served, including number and types of special diets/meals ordered and provided, and daily usage and losses.
Requirements
  • Leadership and management skills, with the ability to manage and coordinate the overall kitchen and food services operations.
  • Knowledge of food services management, including cooking and preparation methods and procedures, cost control, menu planning principles, restricted diet and basic nutrition, meat preparation, and equipment operation and care.
  • Experience working in a high-volume cooking facility, with the ability to interpret and apply legislation, policies, and procedures related to food services, nutrition, and waste management.
  • Analytical thinking, planning, and coordination skills, with the ability to identify and resolve a range of food services operational issues.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with senior management, institutional staff, suppliers, and stakeholders.
