Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Recreation Assistant to join our team. As a Recreation Assistant, you will work closely with our Recreation Therapist to design and implement individual and group activity programs that promote physical, emotional, and social well-being for our patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement individual and group activity programs, including arts and crafts, cooking, music, sports, games, and socio-cultural events.
- Monitor and evaluate patient progress, reporting relevant observations and providing suggestions for change or modifications to existing programs.
- Set up and organize furnishings and equipment for activity programs, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all patients.
- Make adaptations to recreation activities and equipment as recommended by Recreation, Aquatic, and Music Therapist(s), and other health care professionals.
- Maintain inventory of equipment, supplies, and tools for recreation activities, identifying missing items and reporting malfunctioning equipment to designated personnel.
- Prepare patients for activities, assisting with clothing and personal supplies, and checking with other health care providers for potential contradictions to patient participation.
- Provide functional direction to volunteers during activity programs, communicating established plans and demonstrating related techniques.
- Transport patients on group outings, operating a passenger bus and conducting pre-trip inspections.
- Complete required reports, recording workload statistics and attending program and practice meetings as directed.
- Carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements, immediately reporting unsafe situations to supervisors or other personnel.
Requirements
- Grade 12, completion of a Recreation Therapy Program, and two (2) years' recent, related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Valid class 4 vehicle license (unrestricted).

- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to teach.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada.
- Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism, and Indigenous Cultural Safety.
