Job Summary
This Research Assistant/Technician position in the Karsan Lab will perform routine research tasks and assists with coordinating research studies, maintaining supplies, performing experiments, and acquiring and recording data. We are looking for an individual who can be meticulous and detail oriented with an understanding of molecular biology.
Organizational Status
The Lab Manager will provide day-to-day supervision, and senior Technicians are available to provide general help and supervision within the lab. The position will also directly support two graduate students in their research. Weekly meetings will occur with the technicians and grad students.
Work Performed
- Carries out routine lab duties such as media preparation and mouse genotyping
- Maintains inventories, and records according to established protocols
- Cultures human cell lines, tests mycoplasma and monitors incubator CO2 level
- Takes care of shipping and receiving
- Provides research support to trainees as directed by two graduate students
- Has, or able to obtain, transport of dangerous good certification
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position requires following instructions and attention to detail. Errors in general lab support could affect the operation of the entire lab; errors in trainee research support could have a major impact to both grant money and time. Experimental records must be kept up-to-date.
Supervision Received
Works under direct supervision of the Lab Manager and graduate students according to established protocols. Receives supervision in the lab from senior technicians.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
No previous direct experience is required, but prior handling of biological materials and familiarity with essential laboratory techniques, such as pipetting and centrifugation, are assets. A proven track record is required from a previous job that demonstrates organization, record-keeping and meticulousness.
