The Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Research Assistant position. This is a Part-time Fixed Term position with a standard work schedule of 17.5 hours per week for approximately 4 months without a possibility for extension.

The work will normally be conducted during regular office hours but requires flexibility during periods of fieldwork. The successful applicant will report to Dr. Brent Else (Associate Professor, Geography).

This position involves the collection and analysis of oceanographic data relevant to determining air-sea CO2 exchange in Arctic waters. The majority of the time devoted to this job will be focused on analysis of historical data collected onboard the CCGS Amundsen during past cruises conducted by the ArcticNet Network of Centres of Excellence. Specifically, the analyzed data will consist of underway measurements of dissolved CO2 in seawater, and ancillary oceanographic data such as sea surface temperature and salinity. The position will include approximately 1 month of fieldwork to gather additional seawater samples and instrument measurements. Quality control/analysis of data will be a component of the job. The Research Assistant will contribute to writing research papers and reports. Field work, including in remote locations, will be required.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Analyze oceanographic data to calculate air-sea fluxes of CO2.
  • Operate field equipment to analyze seawater samples.
  • Contribute to research publications, and research reporting.
  • Quality control/analysis of sample results.
  • Assist with field preparations/field logistics.
  • Conduct field sampling.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • MSc in Geography or related Earth Science field is required, with relevant research experience.
  • At least three seasons of field experience in Arctic environments.
  • At least one year experience working in a marine research laboratory.
  • Experience operating instruments to measure dissolved CO2 concentrations in seawater.
  • Past experience working with oceanographic data to determine air-sea CO2 fluxes in polar seas.
  • Strong computational skills, including experience working in a scientific programming language such as Matlab or R.
  • Experience handling seawater and freshwater samples.
  • Technical experience with scientific equipment.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Familiarity with University of Calgary research policies and procedures is an asset.
