The Opportunity

Under the direction of the Chief Engineer or Assistant Chief Engineer, the Relief Shift Engineer assists with the operation of the Steam Plant and is responsible for routine maintenance, minor repairs and good housekeeping in the plant.

  • Performs all duties safely. This includes, but is not limited to, going up and down ladders and opening and closing valves.
  • Covers both the Assistant Shift Engineer and Shift Engineer positions as required.
  • Operates the Steam Plant in a safe and efficient manner. This includes, but is not limited to, the operation of the Plant through Delta V DCS, by manual adjustments in the field, and, when covering the Shift Engineer position, directs the Assistant Shift Engineer to make required adjustments to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Plant.
  • Completes rounds on Boilers, including auxiliary equipment. Gathers and records any data required. Records and logs any deficiencies. When covering as Shift Engineer, communicates the deficiencies to the Assistant Shift Engineer and escalates the deficiency to the Assistant Chief Engineer or Chief Engineer if the deficiency is of a serious nature and could result in an immediate threat to the Plant, or t the safety of Employees or the Public.
  • Performs and removes lockouts as directed by the Assistant Chief Engineer, or the Chief Engineer.
  • Performs regular water tests on Boilers, as directed. Ensures all results are recorded on spreadsheets and online log sheet(s).
  • Works with all Contractors as required to aid them in their tasks, including janitorial contractors.
  • When covering as Shift Engineer, assists the Assistant Shift Engineer to safely move or lifts heavy loads, using mechanical aids such as a hand jack or dolly when required.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must hold a 2nd Class Power Engineering certificate.
  • Several years of experience working as a Power Engineer in a high pressure steam plant.
  • Other industrial trade tickets or certificates are considered an asset e.g. Millwright and Plumbing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, Delta V control Systems and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

  • Demonstrates a commitment to health and safety and role models safety leadership..
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated and the ability to thrive with minimal supervision.
  • Team player mentality with excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.


Working Conditions:

  • This is a 24/7 shift work position with 12 hour day and night shifts.
  • You must be physically able to work in a steam plant.
