Description

The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology (ANAR) in the Faculty of Arts is currently seeking a Full-time Staff Limited Term Curatorial and Repatriation Specialist for approximately 18 months.

This position reports to the Pod Manager and works collaboratively with the Department Head and Archaeology and Biological Anthropology Lab Technicians in the Department. The Curatorial and Repatriation Specialist will work regular business hours (8:30 AM to 4:30 PM - Monday to Friday) with occasional exceptions for events/meetings/consultations with groups outside of regular business hours. The incumbent is expected to work on campus. This limited-term, full-time position (35 hours per week) is a member of the AUPE bargaining unit.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Inventory and manage various collections held by, or on loan to, the Department of Anthropology & Archaeology.
  • Prepare summaries of the collections and cultural affiliation reports to be reviewed by the Department Head and Manager.
  • Facilitate the repatriation of collections held by, or on loan to, the Department of Anthropology & Archaeology.
  • Ensure compliance and follow procedures for repatriation of artifacts and ancestor remains in accordance with federal, provincial and University of Calgary laws and regulations (including the Archaeological Survey of Alberta and The Royal Alberta Museum).
  • Act as a liaison with loaning organizations (both local and international) as well as First Nations groups and facilitate communication with the Department Head and Manager.
  • Manage and maintain the remaining collections under University of Calgary stewardship to ensure access and inclusion.
  • Complete inventory of various collections held by, and on loan to, the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology.
  • Research loan agreements and archaeological site reports for background material; provide timelines/background of collections.
  • Draft/compose communication for signature for the Department Head.
  • Arrange for the shipping of, and proper storage of, artifacts.
  • Facilitate the repatriation of ancestral remains wherever possible.
  • Facilitate the transfer of cultural property as appropriate.
  • Maintain regular communication and attend required meetings to provide updates of developing work and progress, including working groups or officials.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's level education in Archaeology/Museum Studies/Indigenous Studies or related field; a graduate level degree would be an asset.
  • Experience conducting research and analysis.
  • Experience with collections and artifact management.
  • Experience working with First Nations communities and/or consultations.
  • Experience with data management software (e.g., Access, Excel, etc.).
  • Demonstrated communication, organizational and interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of individuals to secure and/or provide information to clarify situations and resolve issues.
