Recreation Program Leader

BGC Brantford helps young people to discover, develop and achieve their best potential by engaging them in activities that challenge and guide them to develop healthy minds and bodies. Our programs promote positive outcomes in education, active living, nutrition and mental health.

The Club operates several program locations at which a Before/After School Program Leader can be employed, however dependent of the ‘governing body’ there may be varying program delivery models or requirements.

Ministry of Education Legislated Before/After School Programs

Position is responsible to assist with the execution of activities for either children 4 & 5 years of age (Kindergarten) or children 5-12 years of age (school-age) based on How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years.

Programs operate in the morning (7:00am-9:00am) and/or after school (2:45pm-5:45pm) typically but can vary per location.

Ministry of Heritage, Tourism, Sport & Cultural Industries After School Program

Position is responsible to assist with the execution of activities for children 5-12 years based on the MHTCS After School Program framework.

Program operates after school (3:00pm-5:30pm)

BGC Evening Drop-In Recreation Programs (6:00pm-8:30pm)

Position is responsible to execute physical, social, educational and health & wellbeing activities for children 6 - 10 years of age and/or youth 11 - 16 years of age that support healthy development.

DURATION/HOURS:

B/ASP Programs - September to June

Evening Drop-In Recreation - October to May

Hours are as per working schedule which is based on program enrolment & delivery requirements. All hours are flexible based on availability provided by candidate. Multiple shifts can be scheduled in a day (ie 12:00pm-8:00pm, 1:00pm-8:30pm, 2:45pm-8:00pm, 2:45pm-6:00pm, 7:00am-9:00am etc). Full time working hours are available.

Due to the nature of the Club's business, staff cannot always be confined rigidly to a definite schedule of hours - 'flex' time WILL be required.

Education:

Current academic engagement at the Secondary School level and/or Post-Secondary School graduate in Recreation & Leisure, Child & Youth Work, Teaching, Early Childhood Education or a related discipline at college or university level.

Qualifications:

Current First Aid/CPR. Applicable to EDU licensed programs ONLY: Individual must be 18 years of age & must provide proof of immunization.

Experience:

0-2 years previous experience working/volunteering with children and youth.

General Duties:

  • Deliver program in compliance with legislative and/or best practices.
  • Provide an environment and program supplies that are safe and free for any hazards to children - strict adherence to Infection Control Policies & Practices.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as recording attendance, completing accident/incident report or medication reports.
  • Use the program framework when delivering the program for children that support self-regulation, identity, social inclusion, health and well-being, language & thinking skills and physical literacy.
  • Interact with children and families in a pleasant, positive and professional manner.
  • Maintain open communication with parents regarding their child's needs, child's participation, behaviours and/or any incidents.
  • Assist with the identification of high-risk/high-need children who may require or benefit from specialized opportunities or services.

Physical Demands:

  • There are high physical demands associated with this position such as lifting up to 50lbs, bending, squatting, sitting, twisting, reaching, active program engagement, etc.
  • Position works within a climate controlled facility, however programming requirements will require the position to conduct some job responsibilities in outdoor environments/conditions.
  • Due to the large number of children & youth serviced the working environment can be extremely loud during peak hours of operation.
  • The environment can be fast paced and demanding – position is required to be extremely resourceful, ‘think quick on their feet’, manage multiple tasks and issues, able to prioritize and resolve issues effectively.

Supervision:

Position is responsible for the direct supervision of children. This position is responsible to provide guidance and mentoring moments to placement students and/or volunteers, however is not responsible for the direct supervision/evaluation of any Club leader(s), students or volunteers.
