Edmonton Alberta PJ, Edmonton region, Canada HumanEdge Global Full time

The University Hospital Foundation (UHF) was created in 1962 by an act in the Alberta Government legislature. We raise funds to advance patient care and innovation at the University of Alberta Hospital, the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, and the Kaye Edmonton Clinic.

We are agents of hope. Our purpose is to continuously seek, inspire and lead bold solutions to seemingly insurmountable challenges and ignite new discoveries in health. We are passionate promoters of the power of generosity to change and save lives. In the past ten years, generous donations from individuals and our corporate and strategic partners have contributed nearly $220 million dollars to advance world-leading patient care. We are uniquely situated at the nexus of health sciences, academia and research, and we are nimble, quick and capable to take action. We inspire people to help advance our academic health centre as a world leader in specialized and complex care. We support innovative discovery and clinical research that leads to enhanced clinical care; advancements to patient care that result in positive impacts to the quality of patient experience and health outcomes; and new approaches to health care delivery that accelerate the outcomes of complex care.

The 10 Year Strategic Plan, Ignite 2030 aims to boldly transform longstanding approaches to health to achieve better results through innovation. The Plan outlines four strategic imperatives,

  • Partnership Impact,
  • Thought Leadership, and
  • Revenue Generation.

The University Hospital Foundation is driven to find bold solutions, inspire new ideas, and ignite new discoveries by bringing the right people together and ensuring they have the resources they need to achieve the impossible. Like our support toward finding a treatment for Hepatitis B that impacts one-third of the world’s population or creating a machine that keeps lungs alive outside the human body. The University Hospital Foundation are catalysts for change, we advocate for innovation, and together we aim to enhance and transform health services and patient care.

Reporting to the President & CEO, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) serves as key member of the Executive Leadership team and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting the University Hospital Foundation. The position is responsible for all fundraising, fund development, and philanthropy activities including the areas of major gifts, planned giving, endowments, comprehensive campaigns, corporate programs and donor stewardship toward achieving revenue generation and community development objectives. While traditional fund development and revenue generation methods remain and continue, the CDO will bring innovation to the UHF’s fund development strategies and operational approaches.

The direct reports to this position include:

  • Director, Annual Giving
  • Executive Administrator

The Ideal Candidate

You possess relevant and complimentary education, skills and accomplished experience in leading the full array of revenue development plans and programs within a not-for-profit, charity and or private organization including building strategic relationships and partnerships with multiple stakeholders such as private industry, governments, donors, and other external partners. You have experience growing and developing a team of professionals and understand how to influence and elevate an organization’s culture.

You are innovative and bring new ideas and approaches to strategic and operational revenue generation objectives. You are a collaborative results-based professional with mature people, planning, communication, and implementation skills. You have experience working in larger not-for-profit organizations and managing and achieving comparatively higher revenue generation goals. You can contribute and function at strategic and operational levels and embrace clear communications, engaging others, application of technology, change management, and an inclusive and productive team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the hiring, management, mentoring, training, and evaluation of an experienced, talented, and highly professional team.
  • Inspire the team to embrace and achieve the Foundation’s vision and strategic objectives.
  • Plan and develop an effective approach to achieving goals, and clearly communicate the same.
  • Illuminate a path to success for team members by establishing core competencies, key performance indicators and personal development goals.
  • Foster and contribute to a culture of excellence through continuous improvement of individuals, teams, technology, and methodologies.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team on strategic and key operational priorities.
  • Ensure cross-departmental collaboration with other organization leaders.
  • Through your own direct actions and team efforts, identify, cultivate, and steward relationships and connections toward major, comprehensive campaigns, corporate programs and or planned gifts.
  • Engage with the Foundation’s key stakeholders (i.e., Board, donors, site leadership, partners, volunteers, sponsors, etc.).
  • Participate and represent the Foundation at relevant events.
  • Extend expertise, advice and support to the President & CEO and other executive.

Revenue Generation:

  • Plan, develop, guide, and implement strategic and operational fundraising, philanthropy, and fund development initiatives with and through your team in alignment with the UHF’s Ignite 2030 strategy.
  • Manage the pursuit of future major gifts through prospect research, customized proposal writing, presentations, donor data management and direct involvement in major gift solicitations.
  • With the President & CEO and Executive Leadership Team, identify fund development strategies and opportunities from the Board of Trustees and / or through leveraging respective networks.
  • Oversee the Foundation’s donor pipeline management system including the establishment of revenue targets and reporting on outcomes.
  • Ensure comprehensive, timely, and innovative stewardship of donors and corporate partners.
  • Create value propositions that mutually benefit the interests of potential donors and the UHF.
  • Creatively and effectively promote and communicate the objectives of the Foundation through social media, presentations, donor letters, and more.
  • Contribute to building a culture of philanthropy among staff and all donors and strategic partners.

Strategic Partnerships and Relationships:

  • Pursue and cultivate strategic philanthropic relationships within industry, governments, and individuals.
  • Understand and engage in the community to effectively articulate and advocate for the advancement of the life sciences, health services, and patient care sectors.
  • Liaise with industry, researchers, clinicians, physicians, and others.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Undergraduate degree in Business, Commerce, Marketing, or a related and complimentary field.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) designation and or member of Association of Healthcare Philanthropy would be an asset.

  • Demonstrated successes in undertaking and leading strategic fundraising, fund development and philanthropic programs or comprehensive campaigns resulting in combined $15M – $20M+ in annual major gifts, donations, and or revenues.
  • Strong knowledge of ethical and best practices relevant to professional fundraising, prospect research, and donor development.
  • Experience within the not-for-profit or charity sector is preferred.
  • Experience working with government (Ministers and Department Senior Administration) combined with a sound understanding of government funding avenues and approaches is an asset.
  • Experience and familiarity with Raiser’s Edge or equivalent donor/CRM database management systems and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Capacity to manage budgets and large diverse data.
  • Knowledge of Canada Revenue Agency, Federal and Provincial laws pertaining to charitable work.
  • An understanding of clinical research and the innovation ecosystem within Alberta Health Services is an asset.
