Reporting to the Senior Director, Offsite Solutions, the Estimating Manager is accountable for the preconstruction cost management of a variety of projects size ranges and sectors.


This position is based in the Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, or Mississauga office dependent on the successful candidate's place of residence.


What you will be working on


Leadership

  • Promote Safety, Health, and Environmental Policies and Standards.
  • Represent Bird and conduct all communications to the highest standards.
  • Ensure the Bird brand is represented on all projects.


Preconstruction Management

  • Develop, manage and maintain new and existing client, consultant and trade relationships.
  • Actively pursue and obtain new projects for Bird that fit with the region’s marketing plan and preferred business model.
  • Assist with the development of a project strategy that secures the project, and meets or exceeds the project’s required performance, schedule and profitability targets.
  • Ensure that preconstruction services are to Bird's high standard, are consistent with the established processes, procedures and PDF Framework and meet the needs of all stakeholders.
  • Confirm that estimate/cost plans incorporate value for the owner, accommodate the consultant’s design intent and the targeted profitability.
  • Ensure project health, safety and environmental standards are incorporated into each cost plan and estimate.
  • Develop Estimators with the help of the regional management team, including the acquisition of new talent, continuous positive and constructive feedback and the assessment of non-performing employees.
  • Coach and mentor estimators on daily activity to ensure consistent preconstruction services, project controls and personal career development.
  • Drive and communicate strategies to the project team to help win bids.
  • Assist the Management Team with day-to-day operations as required.
  • Final Signoff of estimating deliverables before issued to external sources.


Employee & Talent Management

  • Lead in the recruitment of new talent and support the development of personnel through on-going coaching and mentoring to ensure effective, safe project delivery and individual career development.
  • Develop high performance employees by effectively recruiting suitable new talent, providing continuous positive and constructive feedback, on-going assessment of non-performing employees and planning for succession.
  • Coach and mentor the entire project team members to ensure effective preconstruction delivery.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews of all direct reports, and ensure annual reviews are conducted with all staff.

What We Are Looking For


  • Undergraduate degree in quantity surveying or engineering
  • Eligible for, or have attained, PQS, CET or P.Eng designations
  • 10+ years' “hands-on” experience in the capacity of commercial estimator including a full range of project delivery methods including lump sum, construction management and design build
  • Experience in the capacity of Estimator including a full range of project delivery methods including lump sum, construction management and design build, of large commercial, high rise, civil and/or institutional construction projects $25 million and greater
  • Strong and proven track record of success in closing lump sum tenders for both public and private clients.
  • Proven track record of successful commercial project management of major building construction projects in excess of $100 million.
  • Deep expertise and a proven track record with respect to the continuous improvement project delivery services and value-added constructability processes and practise
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to critique information and provide technical explanations
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing all disciplines, internal employees and external sub-trades
  • Ability to inspire trust in difficult situations by instilling confidence and engaging people on matters that affect them
  • Ability to forge, grow and maintain positive relationships
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities; capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritization of work to achieve them
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem-solving skills, and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
