The Facility Manager is an integral part of the management team, playing the key leadership role for daily operation, annual maintenance, and long-term health of all physical assets on site year-round at Markham H&F. In addition, the Facility Manager is responsible for the hiring and management of the facilities team; development and implementation of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program, budget preparation, and implementation of the refurbishment and capital projects. This position requires the successful individual to live on site at YMCA Markham H&F, in Torrance, Ontario.

In this role, you will:

  • Recruit, hire, and lead the facilities team to ensure a clean, safe, and well-maintained property
  • Provide hands-on services and supervision in the areas of maintenance, site/building repairs and cleaning, as well as general landscaping in the spring/summer and snow removal in the winter
  • Ensure cleanliness, landscaping, annual projects and program support remain the focus of the seasonal facilities team’s daily routine; provide ongoing feedback, guidance and support to direct reports, and participate in performance appraisal system
  • Create a culture of stewardship amongst the larger Markham H&F staff team, campers, and community, including working with leadership staff to create age-appropriate stewardship programs for leadership participants
  • Manage the Water Treatment Plant(s) operations ensuring all appropriate tests and record-keeping are maintained and submitted to the ministry as required
  • Responsible for recruiting, organizing, and directing the volunteer work programs at and for Markham H&F. This includes the leadership groups in the summer months, six volunteer work weekends annually, and any volunteer organization to support the capital campaign construction
  • Actively participate in the Facility Manager Task Force that builds on shared learning to research and implement best practices and code compliance across all YMCA facilities
  • Work closely with the General Manager to proactively maintain strong relationships with the local cottager community and business people
  • Direct and coordinate all relevant tradespeople for repairs and maintenance performed on equipment, building systems, refurbishment, and capital projects, as required. Monitor contract services to ensure quality standards are met and contract compliance. As part of this work, ensure that all work meets applicable building code, is done with properly insured businesses, follows the health and safety requirements and that all electrical work is done by a licensed electrician
  • Give leadership to the Occupational Health and Safety Committee. Ensure the health and safety of employees by implementing safety practices and procedures (including WHMIS) in accordance with the Ontario Health and Safety Act. Responsible to arrange and achieve all required annual inspections and reports for the health inspector, fire safety, water treatment plant, and other ministry requirements
  • Prepare and prioritize capital projects for Vice President, Camping & Outdoor Education, and Senior Vice President, Property Management & Development approval (in conjunction with the General Manager) in accordance with guidelines set out by the Association; assume the role of project manager; monitor budget for capital projects
  • Develop and implement an annual operational plan, capital plan, and purchasing plan while monitoring fiscal results and taking action when necessary
  • Implement and update the approved facility refurbishment program in accordance with guidelines set out by the Property Management team, ensuring that the YMCA standards are followed (e.g. approved colours, environmental sensitivity, long-term perspective, etc.) As part of this, the inventory of tools, supplies, and stock of daily use items, consumables and hard-to-find/critical parts is carefully maintained
  • Expand and maintain the Annual Preventative Maintenance Program. This includes a comprehensive season start-up and shut-down, and ensures that year-round access is maintained for site safety and emergency vehicle access. Ensures site security of the camp property and its assets
  • Manage and maintain the owned and rented vehicle, trailer, and boat fleets including annual repair and restoration of canoes. Understand and adhere to Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration requirements for vehicles

You bring:

  • Post-Secondary Education is an asset
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience in skilled trades and/or building and/or site maintenance
  • 3+ years’ experience supervising staff and/or volunteers
  • Experience working at an outdoor centre/facility or camp an asset
  • Knowledge and experience in ensuring compliance with related building codes and legislation
  • Proven success working with children and youth
  • Excellent leadership skills, results-oriented, driven by initiative
  • Minimum Small Drinking Water System Operator certificate for distribution and water treatment
  • Joint Health & Safety Level 1 and 2 an asset (or willing to obtain)
  • Standard First Aid & CPR “C” by start date
  • Ontario “F” Class License (or willing to obtain)
  • Solid computer skills, comfortable working with Outlook, MS Explorer, MS Excel, financial software, and Facility Management applications
  • Focused on quality, creativity, and innovation
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff, and volunteers
  • Excellent understanding of diversity, inclusion, and equity including the ability to identify and address barriers, work effectively with diverse stakeholders, and integrate equity into program design
