Job Summary


The Environmental Compliance Officer will be responsible for managing and securing environmental permits for Responsible Energy’s operations initially in Ontario, Canada, ensuring full regulatory compliance. This role is ideal for a professional passionate about environmental policy and eager to become an expert in PFAS.


Reporting directly to the CEO, the Environmental Compliance Officer will lead permitting processes, oversee compliance frameworks, and engage with regulatory agencies to ensure Responsible Energy remains at the forefront of environmental excellence.

Key Responsibilities


1. Regulatory Compliance & Permitting

  • Lead and manage environmental permitting processes for PFAS destruction projects in both Canada and the USA.
  • Ensure full compliance with local, provincial/state, and federal environmental regulations governing hazardous waste treatment and air emissions.
  • Develop and maintain environmental management systems to support operational excellence and regulatory adherence.

2. Technical Expertise & PFAS Specialization

  • Become Responsible Energy’s in-house expert on everything PFAS, continuously updating knowledge on evolving regulations, treatment methods, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to optimize process design and technology deployment in alignment with environmental compliance requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance on environmental risk assessments, permitting applications, and mitigation strategies

3. Stakeholder Engagement & Reporting

  • Act as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, local governments, and environmental organizations.
  • Prepare and submit detailed reports, environmental impact assessments, and compliance documentation.
  • Participate in industry conferences, regulatory hearings, and scientific forums to stay informed of emerging environmental policies and technologies.

4. Project & Risk Management

  • Oversee environmental risk assessments and ensure mitigation strategies are implemented effectively.
  • Manage permitting timelines and budgets, ensuring regulatory milestones are met efficiently.
  • Maintain a proactive approach to environmental risk management, identifying and addressing compliance issues before they escalate.


Qualifications


Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field.
  • Master’s or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Chemistry with specialization in contaminant destruction or advanced waste treatment (preferred).
  • P.Eng. (Professional Engineer) designation or Certified Environmental Practitioner (EP) is a strong asset.


Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental compliance, permitting, or regulatory affairs, preferably in hazardous waste management.
  • Proven experience in navigating environmental permitting processes (EA/ECA) in Ontario, Canada.
  • Knowledge of PFAS treatment and destruction technologies is highly desirable.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, permitting processes, and compliance frameworks.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage budgets, timelines, and regulatory reporting.
  • Exceptional communication and technical writing skills, with experience engaging regulatory agencies and stakeholders.
  • Ability to interpret complex environmental legislation and translate it into actionable compliance strategies.


Compensation
