Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Data Analyst in Health Services Research/HEOR in the Center for Health Services Research at the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research. Under the director of the Director of the Center for Health Services Research (CHSR) and/or senior data analysts, the incumbent will provide data-analytic support to a large and complex program of federally funded research and will construct statistically advanced programs in SAS and other software to link and analyze large and complex health care datasets, including national Medicaid and Medicare insurance claims, private insurance claims, National Death Index data, and other sources representing tens of millions of individuals followed over multiple years.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Works with Center investigators, senior staff and collaborators to implement sophisticated, longitudinal statistical programming and data analyses for health services research and outcomes studies. Analyses will include application of advanced techniques in SAS software for longitudinal data analysis, data linkage across large datasets, construction of medication supply calendars and other measures of health care use over time, reporting descriptive statistics, and statistical modeling of outcomes.
  • Responsible for cleaning and managing data, including conducting quality control analyses.
  • Creates and maintains analytic workplans and documentation.
  • Constructs analytic variables.
  • Applies appropriate statistical modeling methods; and participates in the interpretation and preparation of results for publications and presentations.

This position is grant funded.

Position Status: Part Time

Hours Per Week: 19.9

FLSA: Nonexempt

Position Salary: $35 - $50

Terms of Appointment: Temporary Staff Appointment - Hourly

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, statistics, social science, policy analysis, public health, or related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in data analysis, programming, and research, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise with SAS, minimum of one year with more years preferred.
  • SAS certification.
  • SAS Macro and Proc SQL experience.
  • Experience analyzing health care claims data for health services research.
  • Knowledge of health care data standards, formats and codes.
  • Experience with health care management/medical informatics.
  • Other highly desirable experience includes experience with propensity score matching, analysis of electronic medical record data, and/or experience with machine learning methods.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience writing statistical programs to process and analyze large, complex datasets.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Close attention to detail, well organized.
  • High degree of computer literacy.
  • Requires high-level skills in data management and statistical programming, with expertise in SAS programming and strong experience with very large datasets, preferably entailing longitudinal analyses and application of advanced statistical methods.
  • Experience in longitudinal analysis of health outcomes using healthcare claims data is highly desirable.
  • Qualified candidates will have advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working both independently and collaboratively.
  • A strong interest in using complex data to address important health services and policy research questions.
  • An organized and detail-oriented approach to balance and prioritize multiple simultaneous projects, and motivation to advance the level technical skills needed to increase expertise with longitudinal, multi-level, machine learning, and geospatial methods in the secondary data analysis of large health care data.
