The Translational Addiction Research Laboratory (TARL) is seeking a full-time, temporary (1-year contract) Research Lab Manager. This position will report to Head of the laboratory, and will encompass planning, coordinating, and overseeing the research laboratory operations. In collaboration with scientists, staff and trainees, you will manage and oversee a variety of research clinical trials focused on addiction and mental health.

The TARL Research Lab Manager leads the development of problem solving and facilitative communications both intra and inter-departmentally. This includes creating opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations to advance the goals of the department and organization that includes fostering and building national and international relationships.

The TARL Research Lab Manager works collaboratively with Research Services management to facilitate the laboratory operations, and works cooperatively with other departments to meet and maintain institutional standards and departmental requirements, including Biosafety, Contract Development, Research Ethics Board, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology and Support Services.

The TARL Research Lab Manager will assist the Head of the laboratory in building and developing a productive scientific team fully engaged in translational addiction research, including the training, mentoring and supervision of staff and students from a wide range of disciplines. The TARL Research Lab Manager will play a key role in recruitment and directly supervises employees within the research lab. You will be responsible for guiding project assignments, completing performance appraisals, assisting in training new students and laboratory staff, purchasing and maintaining laboratory/project equipment and supplies, ensuring compliance with quality assurance processes and laboratory safety guidelines including maintaining an equipment inventory, and allocating laboratory personnel and resources to different projects. This position is located at 100 Stokes Street / 250 College Street.

You possess a bachelors degree in Health Science or Psychology (or a related discipline) and at least two (2) years’ experience in a research laboratory setting OR the equivalent education and experience. Experience in addiction research and clinical trials are required. Previous administrative and management experience in a scientific setting is preferred.

The position requires strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills, critical ability, flexibility, and initiative. Candidates will possess the ability for self-directed learning/working, as well as collaboration and teamwork. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, coordinate and supervise varied complex scientific projects is required. Highly developed problem solving and negotiation skills are required to critically analyze, evaluate and resolve issues or problems related to research activities often involving diverse stakeholders. Previous experience in training and mentoring research staff would be advantageous.

Knowledge and experience in quantitative and qualitative research methodology is required. Candidates will also have a highly developed ability to review scientific literature and to conduct comprehensive literature reviews. The position also requires demonstrated ability in manuscript preparation and research grant proposals, including the ability to explain complex issues in plain language both verbally and in writing.

Proficiency with computer programs including MS Office, Excel, Endnote, REDCAP, and statistical software is required.
