About this role:
As a Staff Mechanical Engineer on the Robotics Engineering Team, you will help us create the most advanced robots for our customers. You will work closely with other disciplines (AI, ML, Firmware, Electrical, Product, etc.) designing structural and motion components for complex robotics systems. You will own critical components of new projects in end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) and robotic system design. You will work closely with our Robotics Software and Machine Learning teams to ensure that the designs you create are mechanically sound and empower our advanced AI.

What you’ll do:
  1. Design and build structural and motion assemblies (e.g. robot supports, mechanism design).
  2. You’ll be creating assembly drawings in SolidWorks and managing the system bill of materials through our PLM.
  3. Ensuring accurate and concise assembly instructions and documentation of SOPs are available for manufacturing and transfer to CMs.
  4. Experience in creating assembly instructions and creation of system documentation and SOPs.
  5. Work in a cross-functional team developing technologies to be used in production.
  6. Perform design reviews, promote and implement development best practices.
  7. Identify improvements in engineering standards and procedures and promote best practices to ensure the team produces high-quality products.
  8. Elevate the skill of the team through technical mentorship and foster a culture of mentorship within the team.
What you bring:
  1. 8+ years as a mechanical engineer in a related industry.
  2. Ability to iterate quickly and demonstrate new concepts through rapid prototypes of your design.
  3. Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals and the ability to address problems from first principles to critically justify decisions, communicate feedback, and help build consensus within the team.
  4. Conduct root cause analyses and mechanical forensic investigation.
  5. Experience modelling and creating part drawings for sheet metal parts, weldments, and precision machined components with knowledge of DFMA principles.
  6. Expert in designing with SolidWorks or other major packages (3D CAD, 2D drawings) including extensive knowledge of conducting FEA for a wide range of cases and materials.
  7. Capable of leading a small group of engineers to ensure project deliverables are completed on time (including FMEAs, design reviews, supplier data packs, etc).
  8. Knowledge of safety systems for industrial machinery (ISO 12100, ISO 10218, or similar standard).
  9. Experience with designing systems that have reached production at scale, considering all relevant stakeholders (e.g., manufacturing, operations, service, etc).
  10. Experience mentoring and guiding junior and intermediate-level engineers and interns, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team culture while promoting best practices.
  11. Ability to travel internationally up to 10% of the time.
Bonus Qualifications:
  1. Applicable skills in at least one of the following areas: end effector design, industrial automation, robotic work cells.
  2. Pneumatic system experience (e.g. valving and instrumentation).
  3. Knowledge of and experience selecting, sizing, and designing for a range of motor types like BLDCs, steppers, etc.
  4. Lead-screw & ball-screw actuators, pneumatic actuators, valving, and air preps, solenoid actuators, etc.
  5. A wide variety of linear and rotary bushings and bearings.
  6. Transmission systems like gears, belts, chains, and more.
  7. Various seals and gaskets.
  8. Various types of sensors, PCB packaging, and other electromechanical components.
  9. Experience with analog electrical equipment (e.g. specifying cables, connectors, panel layouts, NFPA79).
  10. Automated test fixture creation (e.g. PLC programming experience).
  11. Experience with sensor selection, integration, and signal conditioning.
  12. Understanding of programming microcontrollers/processors for limited bench-top testing.
  13. Experience designing and creating drawings for castings and injection molded components.
  14. Hands-on experience with commissioning a system.
  15. Knowledge of thermal calculations and conducting thermal analyses.
  16. Proficient in the use and interpretation of both Cartesian (traditional) and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) in drawings.
