SALARY: $70,931.93 (Yr1) to $135,907.07 (Yr14) + 10% Staff Lawyer Benefit Plan (As per the PEA Salary Schedule)

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Reporting to the Manager, Family Law Advice Services, as Family Duty Counsel providing services for Port Coquitlam and other court locations. This position is responsible for providing legal advice and limited representation in family/child protection law practice, with some administrative legal support.
DUTIES:
- Provides family/child protection law services including summary legal advice and information to clients, limited representation, and duty counsel services in courts as assigned.
- Conducts legal research and prepares required documents.
- Develops solutions to family legal problems and provides services for clients in all types of family law matters.
- Discusses, negotiates and resolves case matters by working with opposing lawyers, judges, and social workers as appropriate.
- Provides day to day supervision and work direction including performance planning, coaching and feedback sessions to support staff.
- Supports the work of Family Law Services.
- Develops and delivers public legal education in family/child protection law as required.
- Collaborates with community advocates through the exchange of information and assistance with LABC work and law reform work.
- Builds relationships and partnerships with community groups including Indigenous communities.
- May assist in the development and delivery of workshops for community members on various issues related to family law.
- Provide advice on service issues, policy development, pilot projects, and local practices in the Region.
- Provides time logs, completes tariff billings and monthly caseload reports as requested.
- Develop partnerships and effective working relationships with the private bar and other justice system participants in the Region.
- Performs other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A degree from a Law School of recognized standing and membership or eligibility for membership in the Law Society of British Columbia.
- A preference for four (4) to eight (8) years of call to the bar in British Columbia, with significant practice experience in family and child protection law.
- Experience supervising support staff.
- Experience at Provincial and Supreme Court levels involving the full range of family and child protection law issues.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated excellent knowledge of family and child protection law and practice.
- Understanding of Indigenous issues and cultures.
- Knowledge of alternative dispute resolution and collaborative processes.
- Ability to communicate and relate to Indigenous people and their communities.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
