Position

We are currently seeking a highly motivated and versatile IT professional to join our team. The Core Network Specialist – Wireless has responsibility for the design, operation and maintenance of the campus-wide University wireless network infrastructure. This includes architectural, design, and back-end operation of the infrastructure.

Secondary responsibilities include supporting other members of the Digital Networks and Data Center Services (DNDCS) team in the design, operation and maintenance of the Campus Area Network infrastructure and support of other services the team is responsible for.

Duties

Wireless Network Design/Operation/Support:

  • Provide design services to deploy wireless network service across the whole campus.
  • Address emerging issues that arise during the deployment and continuing operation of the network.
  • Interact with various end-user supporting groups (IT Service Desk, Endpoint Support, etc.) to investigate problems relating to the wireless network.
  • Continuously investigate new technologies which may affect the operation of the wireless network or be used to expand its capabilities.
  • Manage interaction with contractors who will implement cabling and hardware services for wireless deployment.
  • Work with wireless associated services and devices to determine institutional suitability and requirements for support.

Core Network Design/Operation/Support:

  • Work with the other members of the DNDCS Team to ensure the availability and reliability of the core network of the University.
  • Utilize monitoring and reporting tools to discover evolving problems before they become an operational concern that impacts campus services.
  • Configure routers, switches, and other network devices and client connections as required.

On-Call responsibility

  • Participate in the DNDCS on-call rotation.
  • Utilize familiarity with, and skills relating to the services operated by the Team to respond quickly to any problem that emerges at any time.
  • If the resolution of a problem requires the involvement of other parties, the Analyst still retains responsibility for monitoring and facilitating the resolution of the problem.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science in computing science, engineering or equivalent experience in design and operation of large-scale wireless networks.
  • Wireless networking certifications including but not limited to Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) – Enterprise, Certified Wireless Design Professional (CWDP).
  • Training and experience in large and advanced network operation and design is essential.
  • Experience with Cisco Catalyst Center management platform for managing wireless infrastructure.
  • Experience with the suite of Cisco Wireless products in the design, deployment and management of wireless networks in a campus environment.
  • Experience with Ekahau wireless survey and design tools for the creation and validation of wireless deployment plans in large multi-story buildings.
  • An advanced experience and understanding of Network protocols (wired and wireless) and related standards.
  • Experience with RADIUS authentication protocol and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Eduroam wireless roaming access service.
  • Experience with design/deployment/support of point to point wireless infrastructure.
  • In-depth network troubleshooting techniques.
  • Detailed problem-solving approach and abilities.
  • Comfort working with multiple operating systems including Windows, Linux, MacOS, iOS, Android.
