The primary role is to provide leadership and subject matter expertise within the Rope Access programs as part of the Canadian Corporate QHSE team. This includes being the designated IRATA Technical authority, overseeing the IRATA certification process, ensuring compliance with IRATA standards, provincial legislations, and regulations. The manager works closely with Canadian regional, divisional management, and field staff to further the integration of rope access compliance processes and practices and the full adoption of the Integrated Management System, Rope Access specific programs, IRATA standards, and regional priorities. The role is responsible for overall program development and improvement, IRATA certification process, reporting and investigating rope access related incidents in collaboration with the QHSE team, the approval of the use, storage, repair, and replacement of rope access equipment within Canada, implementation of safety plans and controls designed to manage risk and improve the quality of rope access service delivery, coaching rope access level 3’s, developing a culture that embraces QHSE and takes action to provide reliable service.

The role requires high visibility and connection to field staff (about 50% time or greater), including regular field audits and site visits. The individual will be a level 3 with extensive field experience supervising and working with rope access technician solutions in various industrial environments with trades and inspection.

Preferred location for the role is within Alberta (Fort McMurray and/or Edmonton area).

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that Tacten and Acuren’s Industrial Rope Access Program is compliant with IRATA standards and associated provincial regulations;
  • Manages the national IRATA Certification process – system audits both internal and external (from IRATA);
  • Provides field level support and mentorship by completing field audits;
  • Develop, manage and standardize rope access level 3 supervisor process;
  • Support QHSE team in responding to rope access related incidents and near misses across Canada;
  • Support the development of QHSE procedures – such as rad safety from ropes, safety from ropes, trades from ropes etc.;
  • Investigate and report on rope access related incidents;
  • Manage the approved equipment and supplier list – test equipment, obtain feedback etc.;
  • Act as the company Subject Matter Expert - provide assistance to management with the interpretation of client rope access requirements;
  • Develop and provide rope related communications such as lessons learned, industry information;
  • Develop and update the company’s rope compliance procedures and manual (in collaboration with the US Rope compliance manager);
  • Provide internal month end reporting – metrics, summaries etc.;
  • Provide external reporting to IRATA – quarterly metrics, incident notifications;
  • Stay abreast of industry rope access news including incidents, legislation changes, program updates etc.
Requirements
  • IRATA Rope Access Level 3 certifications;
  • IRATA Trainer (an asset);
  • Relevant safety and auditor training and certifications are a plus;
  • Minimum 10 years of practical field experience applying rope access with trades (i.e. welding, insulation, inspection, etc.);
  • Strong knowledge of practical rope access techniques and solutions, including equipment and technology;
  • IRATA Certification Standards (ICOP, TACs) and related Rope Access Standards (SPRAT);
  • Rope Access Equipment standards and requirements;
  • Canadian Regulations and Legislation related to Rope Access, including specific provincial legislations and regulations;
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Industrial Rope Access applications;
  • Thorough understanding of safe work practices and employer safety obligations;
