Job Summary

The Azure Data Engineer is responsible for understanding requirements, design, development, and coordinating platform/application development throughout the project. The role requires collaboration with data engineers, data scientists, and stakeholders to understand complex data requirements and assist in designing, developing, and optimizing data pipelines, architectures, and data sets, ensuring efficient data ingestion, transformation, and reliable delivery using Microsoft Azure and Informatica/II.


Key responsibilities include:

  1. Build and support data products for Canadian use: design, curate, and publish self-service connected datasets that increase re-use and quality of the data available in support of business data and analytic initiatives.
  2. Design and develop data models and patterns for re-usability in collaboration with Data Governance and Information Architecture teams.
  3. Optimize data engineering and preparation activities through automation and leveraging of modern tools and techniques.
  4. Collaborate on a daily basis with the core data team and business while assisting with mentoring other engineers on the team.
  5. Collaborate with business teams to understand data needs, provide recommendations on solution options, and support business initiatives when required.
  6. Inventory critical data elements including lineage, classification, and usage.
  7. Create and maintain strong collaboration with different groups inside the organization.

Roles & Responsibilities
  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or similar.
  2. 8-10 years of experience in the field of data and data management.
  3. Experience in Azure Data Lake, Data Factory, Databricks, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Data Warehouse, etc. is required.
  4. Perform data discovery, design, develop and construct self-service data products.
  5. Experience in working with cloud-native systems following IaC and DataOps principles (Git repo/Jenkins/Terraform, CI/CD, Orchestration, Actions).
  6. Familiarity with firewall/network rules.
  7. Interest in data integration technologies, cloud platforms, and data engineering tools.
  8. Knowledge of Syncsort is an added advantage.
  9. Ensure architecture meets business needs.
  10. Client new opportunities data acquisition opportunities.
  11. Employ a variety of scripting languages, recommend ways to improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality, inventory metadata.
  12. Build once, use many - Influence Data Quality.
  13. Perform data assessments and insights that promote active data remediation that improves data quality across the company and makes a positive difference for our customers.

What The Candidate Will Bring
  1. Mathematics, Computer Science, and/or Data Analytics degree.
  2. 3-5+ years of applied data engineering experience (Data & Analytics education an asset).
  3. Expertise and knowledge of SQL, Python, Azure Data Bricks, Synapse, ADF, and Power BI.
  4. Strong understanding of data modeling and ability to apply different techniques within a cloud platform.
  5. Excellent communication, presentation, and strong organization skills.
  6. Excitement to share learnings with others across the company, including senior leadership and community of practice participation.
  7. Agile, practical, customer service-oriented mindset.
  8. Generally curious and excited to learn new things.
