The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is the largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital in Canada, as well as one of the world's leading research centres in its field. Our services are delivered to help transform the lives of people affected by mental illness and addictions. Our goal is to tailor treatment to each individual, providing patient-centered, comprehensive, coordinated care.
The Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre is aligned with CAMH’s strategic goals of improving care for the patients of today and innovating care for the patients of tomorrow. It is intended to promote excellence in the field of adult neurodevelopmental disabilities (e.g., intellectual disability, autism) and mental health. The Azrieli Centre is dedicated towards finding innovative solutions to solving major challenges in care delivery, and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities and to increasing educational opportunities in this field for mental health trainees and providers. The Azrieli Centre is built upon four pillars: Clinical Innovation; Research Excellence; Education and Training; and Knowledge Exchange. Through this work, the Azrieli Centre will help improve education, awareness, diagnosis and treatment of the adult neurodevelopmental population locally, nationally and globally.
The Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre is seeking a staff scientist with a specialized focus on quantitative health services research in relation to neurodevelopmental disabilities, mental health, and health care delivery in adulthood. In this capacity, the successful candidate will report directly to the Director of the Centre, spearheading critical research initiatives to engage with both the scientific and mental health care communities associated with the Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre.
Primary responsibilities will involve the establishment and management of a robust health services research program and team. The Scientist will play a pivotal role in generating and exploring innovative research ideas, while also contributing to the education of emerging scientists and trainees. Furthermore, the incumbent will actively promote knowledge exchange within the field of adult neurodevelopmental disabilities and beyond.
The selected candidate is expected to have expertise in quantitative health services research in relation to neurodevelopmental disabilities in adulthood, offering training, supervision, and mentorship to staff and students across diverse disciplines. Emphasis will be placed on leading the development and implementation of impactful policy relevant research aimed at enhancing healthcare for adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities and building the capacity of future health services researchers in the field. This role will also involve supporting research tied to clinical services at CAMH targeted toward this population, and active participation in hospital, provincial and national health service research efforts.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish collaborations at the local, national, and international levels. Additionally, practical supervision of undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral trainees, and technical staff is integral to the role. As a staff scientist, active leadership in research activities, maintenance of a prolific publication record, and securing extramural funding are key responsibilities. Dissemination of research results through presentations at academic meetings, conferences, and communication with key decision-makers is expected. Participation in leadership advisory groups, both within CAMH and externally, is also a requirement.
Adherence to approved CAMH practices, procedures, and safety standards is imperative in conducting research studies. Beyond research commitments, the Scientist will collaborate within a multidisciplinary environment encompassing both fundamental and clinical research. A commitment to fostering diversity, encouraging teamwork, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements is essential.
As a fully affiliated institution with the University of Toronto, the successful applicant must secure academic affiliation at the Assistant Professor level. The role is based at 1025 Queen Street, Toronto, Ontario.
The successful applicant is required to have a PhD in psychology, health services research or related discipline. A minimum of 3 years of post-graduate research experience focused on health services research in the neurodevelopmental disabilities population is required. Experience working with population level data, and partnerships within relevant knowledge users in policy and practices is considered an asset. Eligibility for an academic appointment at the Assistant Professor level (or higher) is required. The successful candidate will also possess sound judgment, excellent organizational, communication (verbal/written) and strong analytical skills. The demonstrated ability to cultivate internal and external relationships and collaborate effectively with colleagues, decision makers and the scientific community is required. You must be able to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team. The capacity to work with individuals of diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds is required. Bilingualism (English/French) and/or proficiency in a second language is considered an asset.
