Working closely with the Financial Controller located in Toronto, you will use your expertise to support the financial department. The work location for this position is flexible and is based on a combination of working from home and working on-site in Newfoundland (on-site for at least one week per month).

Job Responsibilities:
  • Implement sound financial operations, systems, and procedures aligned with GAAP.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations of bank accounts and credit card statements.
  • Review transactions for the correct department, funding source, and project coding.
  • Ensure timely processing of payroll, payables, and receivables.
  • Assist in budgeting and monitoring actuals against budgets, reporting discrepancies.
  • Prepare timely and reliable monthly and quarterly financial reports for management.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and provincial regulations and funding source terms.
  • Maintain and recommend improvements to accounting systems for better internal controls and efficiencies.
  • Handle all tax-related payments and filings and assist in tax return preparation.
  • Direct and coordinate all accounting operational functions, including payroll, inventory, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
  • Oversee full-cycle accounts payable, including invoice processing, vendor payments, and ledger reconciliation.
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions and ensure records are properly maintained.
  • Monitor the purchase order process and support the design of accounting records for new entities or departments.
  • Support year-end financial procedures and coordinate information provision for external audits.
  • Respond to finance-related inquiries and requests from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Liaise with government agencies, private businesses, and other stakeholders on financial matters.
  • Provide direction, coaching, and supervision to finance staff, conducting performance evaluations and collaborating with HR on personnel records.

As the ideal candidate, you will have a bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related discipline and 5 years of progressive accounting experience. Experience in a similar finance role, particularly within an industrial setting, will be an asset. You are proficient in financial accounting software, Excel, and general computer skills.

A professional accounting designation such as CA or CPA is considered an asset, and an understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) would be beneficial. You possess strong organizational skills, great attention to detail, and a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
