Overview:


This position is located in Hay River, NT.


The Controller provides team leadership and supervision to the Financial Reporting group. This role requires strong leadership skills, a strong understanding of accounting principles, and the ability to work collaboratively with various departments. The Controller ensures compliance with accounting standards and internal accounting policies while providing strategic financial advice.


Reporting to the Finance Director, the Controller leads the Financial Reporting group's daily activities: they ensure the organization's Mission, Vision and Values are articulated and understood by employees and lead towards divisional targets. As a supervisor, they set tasks, evaluate performance, and guide their team towards delivering outcomes in a team-oriented atmosphere.


Responsibilities:
  • Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.
  • Responsible for the preparation and delivery of accurate and timely monthly financial information and supporting the management team to understand and use this information to make strong business decisions.
  • Acts as primary interface with external auditors and co-ordinates year-end audit plans with the external auditors and the shareholder, the GNWT (Government of Northwest Territories). Drafts year-end financial statements and submits to the Director, Finance for approval.
  • Ensures financial integrity of all accounts and accounting sub-systems, with an eye to developing or maintaining process efficiencies.
  • Provides team leadership and technical direction to financial professionals, technicians and support staff involved in financial reporting. Participates in the recruitment of staff, the identification of training needs, and the monitoring and evaluation of work and performance of staff.
  • Assist with the preparation and support of the General Rate Application or other regulatory filings including any ad hoc requests from Financial Planning & Analysis.
  • Prepares budget for the Financial Reporting team and provides additional input on corporate budget items under the responsibility of Financial Reporting such as fuel expense, etc. Leads the Financial Reporting team’s review and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual variance analysis of actuals against budget and prior years.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:
  • Completion of a CPA designation required with a minimum of 3 years of related financial management and leadership experience. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Knowledge and experience in working in a Public-Sector Accounting Standards environment would be an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience in reporting under dual accounting frameworks is beneficial.
  • Computer skills required to operate the Microsoft suite of programs. Strong MS Excel knowledge is required.
  • Experience with Great Plains accounting software is beneficial.
  • Knowledge and experience with Continuous Improvement or process efficiency reviews is beneficial.
  • Knowledge and experience in administrative and financial reporting procedures to coordinate activities and to provide sound advice and recommendations regarding the development, implementation, and monitoring of financial reporting structures.
  • Strong interpersonal and team-building skills to collaborate effectively with the financial reporting group in setting and accomplishing team objectives, and in maintaining collaborative working relationships with other managers, divisional operations staff, and head office in meeting group and corporate objectives.
  • Proven communication, customer service skills, and experience to establish and maintain effective communication with customers, external auditors, regulators, government agencies, and community representatives as a member of the finance division.
  • Must have the ability to learn quickly and adapt to new situations.
  • Excellent analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills to coordinate team activities and ensure work is appropriately prioritised and actioned to meet financial reporting and corporate objectives.
  • Must undergo a Successful Criminal Records Check.

Salary for this position ranges from $71.15/hr. - $88.93/hr plus location and accommodation allowances of approximately $8,023 per annum. We offer a comprehensive benefits package which includes health and dental benefits, long-term disability, life insurance, paid sick days and a defined benefits pension plan. This position is located in Hay River, NT. Relocation assistance may be provided.
