Structural (Small Buildings) Engineer, Project Lead

SBM is seeking a Structural Engineer, Project Lead in our Structural Small Buildings Division in our Kitchener office. The Candidate will be responsible for assisting with structural analysis and design for a variety of building types, including single-family and multi-residential dwellings (included in Part 9 of the OBC). This candidate will work as the Project Lead and with other engineers, engineering trainees, and technologists to complete structural analysis and designs for new and existing buildings/components, as well as assisting with the development and review of drawing packages. They will be required to seal their own work, as well as that of designers under their direction. Field work, including structure evaluation and/or construction review, will also be required.

The firm employs over 120 engineers, engineering trainees, technologists, technicians, planners, and administrative personnel.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Become familiar with design guidelines, standards, and regulations associated with structural engineering (specifically wood frame construction).
  2. Preparation of structural engineering design and documents ensuring accuracy, adequacy, and conformance to the design requirements.
  3. Set up AutoCAD drawings as per the company’s standard.
  4. Prepare AutoCAD drawings from sketches, mark-ups and/or design.
  5. Manage project tasks within assigned time and budget constraints.
  6. Maintain familiarity with current techniques, codes, and standards to sustain and improve technical skills.
  7. Assist in researching new systems, resources, analytical processes, procedures and working practices to identify and implement changes to increase efficiency, productivity, and overall profitability.
  8. Coordinate with other team members on various projects at the same time to achieve project milestones.
  9. Accept technical guidance from colleagues or senior staff.
  10. Work within the project team environment from preliminary stages of the design through to completion.
  11. Coordinate structural aspects of projects with other discipline designs and drawings.
  12. When required, complete site investigations, general reviews of construction, and preparation of field review reports.
  13. Other tasks as assigned by Senior Engineers/Techs, Team Lead or Division Manager.
Skills / Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor’s in Structural Engineering from an accredited Canadian University or equivalent required.
  2. Registered as a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Professional Engineers of Ontario required.
  3. 4+ years of experience in Structural Engineering related to the design of buildings.
  4. Knowledge of OBC (specifically part 9).
  5. Experience with wood frame construction.
  6. Ability to communicate with clients and coworkers effectively.
  7. Proficient with AutoCAD and the Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams); Experience with Woodworks considered an asset.
  8. Strong knowledge of construction materials and practices or construction work experience considered an asset.
  9. Ability to coordinate multiple projects and work in a fast-paced environment and manage competing priorities.
  10. Ability to work both independently with little supervision and in a team environment.
  11. Commitment to ongoing professional and personal growth; willingness to learn.
  12. Excellent attention to detail.
  13. Access to a vehicle for site review/inspections.
Compensation:

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary and annual performance bonus. SBM offers a positive working environment and a good relationship with our employees which translates directly to better customer service and a superior finished product for our clients. The successful candidate will typically work 8am-5pm Monday-Thursday and 8am-2:30pm on Fridays.
