Job Description:

The ESL Instructor will be responsible for developing and delivering English language instruction to immigrant and newcomer women. The instructor will create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that addresses the unique needs of adult learners, fostering language skills that enable participants to integrate into their new community and enhance their employment prospects.


Job Responsibilities

Curriculum Development:

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that cater to various proficiency levels, focusing on practical language skills needed for daily life, employment, and community engagement.
  • Incorporate cultural and contextual elements into the curriculum to enhance learning relevance.

Instruction:

  • Conduct ESL classes using diverse teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles.
  • Facilitate English conversation circles to enhance speaking and listening skills in a relaxed, interactive environment.
  • Use technology and digital resources to supplement traditional teaching methods.
  • Manage large classrooms with students at different proficiency levels, ensuring that each learner receives the appropriate level of instruction and support.

Student Assessment:

  • Assess students’ language proficiency levels through initial and ongoing evaluations.
  • Provide regular feedback and support to help students achieve their language learning goals.
  • Maintain accurate records of students’ progress and attendance.

Support Services:

  • Offer guidance and referrals to students for additional support services, including health, legal, and employment resources.
  • Collaborate with other program staff to address students’ holistic needs.

Professional Development:

  • Stay updated on best practices in ESL instruction and adult education through ongoing professional development.
  • Participate in training sessions and workshops offered by the organization.

Community Engagement:

  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment that respects diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Encourage students’ participation in community activities and events to enhance their language practice and social integration.


Qualifications:

  • Post Secondary in Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field.
  • TESOL/TESL/TEFL certification or equivalent.
  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language to adults, preferably with immigrant and newcomer women.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles and effective ESL instructional strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the challenges faced by immigrant and newcomer women.
  • Proficiency in using digital tools and resources for language instruction.
  • Valid Security Clearance Check, Child Welfare Record Check no more than 4 months old are conditions of hire.
  • Ability to function independently and as part of a team.
  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver’s license, valid insurance, liability as well as a reliable vehicle.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Word, Excel, and the ability to learn and work with internal database systems.


Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a multicultural environment.
  • Knowledge of additional languages spoken.
  • Familiarity with the local community resources and services available to newcomers in Edmonton.


Schedule: 16 hours per week at $25 per hour.
