Your ability to manage risk, negotiate complex solutions, and make informed decisions will ensure the long-term success of the organization. You possess excellent communication skills that enable you to build positive relationships with local, provincial, and national representatives and stakeholders, including government departments and officials. You oversee and coordinate input from other legal advisors, including those in Alberta Health and Justice and Solicitor General, and external legal counsel as required for specialized expertise. Acute Care Alberta is a new provincial health agency in Alberta that will provide acute care services. Acute Care Alberta will work directly with service providers, including Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health and contracted Emergency Medical Services providers to speed up access to high-quality care, reduce wait times and make sure every patient’s journey through the acute care system is efficient and effective across the province. The General Counsel is a strategic advisor to the Chief Executive Officer, executive leadership team, and Board of Directors on all legal matters, including but not limited to, health law, labour relations and employment matters, corporate/commercial matters, contractual language, privacy and freedom of information policy, legal trends, risk, and general regulatory compliance. This position assesses legal liability and provides risk management and mitigation strategies. You are responsible for maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of organizational governance and ensure compliance with all relevant policies and procedures, including those identified in the service agreement. You oversee internal legal counsel and appropriately engage external legal counsel to meet the legal needs of the organization. While managing the flow of legal advice and recommendations throughout the organization to ensure consistency and compliance in all areas, you oversee all litigation or potential litigation by or against the organization. You are skilled at developing and maintaining strategic and operational working relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to, Alberta Health, elected officials, Office of the Alberta Legislature, Office of the Ethics Commissioner of Alberta, Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta, educational institutions, auditors, and peer organizations. You oversee the operational contracts with acute care service providers including Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health, and chartered surgical providers. You ensure the organization meets its commitment to a standard of conduct that preserves and enhances public confidence in the integrity, objectivity, and impartiality of its clinical and business activities. The General Counsel also acts as Corporate Secretary.

The successful candidate must possess a J.D. or LL.B and be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta. At least fifteen (15+) years of legal experience, preferably in an in-house healthcare legal department or law firm serving the healthcare sector or similarly complex service delivery environment. A combination of qualifications and experience may be considered.

With demonstrated leadership abilities, including comfort with decision-making and exercising sound judgement, you have experience providing expert counsel to senior organizational leaders. Your communication skills demonstrate your ability to influence, negotiate, and mediate resolutions to complex situations, and you communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences, including internal and external stakeholders. You have experience working with government ministries, elected officials, and the media. Along with your excellent ability to develop organization strategy and planning, you possess skills in leading strategic initiatives and managing change to achieve positive results. The successful candidate displays an ability to foster partnerships to achieve organizational goals, and models innovation and creativity.

A graduate degree (MBA) is preferred. Experience in the areas of health law, labour relations and employment matters, corporate/commercial matters, contractual language, privacy and freedom of information policy, legal trends, risk, or general regulatory compliance is preferred.
