Overview

Ceragen is a biotechnology and agricultural research organization dedicated to advancing greenhouse fruit and vegetable production. Our new commercial research greenhouse will be at the forefront of innovation in greenhouse agriculture, with a focus on optimizing tomato yields through the use of microbial inoculants. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Greenhouse Grower to help us ramp up production at this new facility and manage day-to-day operations going forward.


Job Summary

As our Grower, you will be responsible for managing all aspects of crop production in our 2-acre research greenhouse. You will oversee the cultivation of tomatoes and other crops of interest, ensuring optimal growth, health, and yield of the crops. This role requires a solid understanding of greenhouse management and crop production. The ideal candidate will have experience in commercial greenhouse operations, a passion for horticulture, and a commitment to continuous improvement.


Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of the 2-acre research greenhouse, including planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, and harvesting
  • Monitor and control environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, CO2 levels, light) to optimize crop growth and health
  • Implement and oversee integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to maintain crop health and minimize chemical inputs
  • Conduct regular crop inspections and assessments, identifying and addressing any issues related to plant health, pests, or diseases
  • Collaborate with research teams to implement and evaluate new growing techniques, technologies, and crop varieties
  • Maintain accurate records of crop production, environmental conditions, and research data
  • Train and supervise greenhouse staff, ensuring all team members adhere to best practices in greenhouse management.
  • Coordinate with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of plants, fertilizers, and other necessary materials
  • Respond to events or issues that threaten harvesting, quality as well as the health and safety of the employees
  • Ensure that all workers adhere to GMP’s, SOP’s and policies & procedures
  • Hold employees accountable to maintain a safe and clean work environment
  • Other core expectations as defined by the company


Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a tomato greenhouse is required
  • 2 – 4 year degree in Horticulture, Agriculture or related field is an asset
  • Comfortable with calculation of amounts, proportions, percentages and volume for the application of fertilizers, chemicals and water
  • Strong knowledge of greenhouse management practices, including climate control, irrigation systems, and pest management
  • Experience with integrated pest management (IPM) and scouting practices
  • Familiarity with research methodologies and data collection in a greenhouse setting.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities
  • Ability to work independently and make informed decisions in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficient in the use of greenhouse management software and tools
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development
  • Good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Fluent in English


Work Environment:

  • Available to work flexible hours including regular Saturdays
  • Able to work in conditions typically found in a greenhouse with high humidity and varying temperatures
  • Able to regularly lift 10-20 kg of materials or products
