Job Synopsis
The Executive Director of Mennonite Central Committee Canada is responsible to the MCC Canada Board through the Board chair for the overall leadership of the relief, development and peacebuilding work of the service agency of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches in Canada. The Executive Director works collaboratively with the MCC U.S. Executive Director to provide leadership for the shared MCC International Program and is the face and voice of MCC Canada, speaking on behalf of MCC Canada and building understanding and support for the mission of MCC among its increasingly diverse constituency. The Executive Director encourages and engages Provincial MCC Executive Directors and MCC Canada Senior Leadership Team in their efforts to accomplish MCC’s mission and uses strong interpersonal skills to help resolve differences within the organization.

Provide inspirational leadership in the development of creative and innovative programs and related support services within the context of the MCC Covenants and inspire the passions of staff in their implementation. (30%)
- Shape strong partnerships within International Program, with MCC U.S. and the provincial MCCs and work to create an empowering environment for all staff. (25%)
- Represent MCC beyond itself with constituent denominations, inter-organization relationships and other stakeholders including national government bodies. (25%)
- Provide support for the governance functions of the MCC Canada Board, including establishing and monitoring compliance with MCC’s identity, purpose, vision, priorities, approaches and values (20%)
Tasks:
Leadership 30%- Provide regular supervision for all direct reports
- Lead monthly and as needed meetings of the MCC Canada Senior Leadership Team
- Monitor and ensure MCCC compliance with the MCC Canada/MCC U.S. Covenant and the Covenant of the MCCs in Canada
- Provide leadership and oversight for shared international program
- Meet regularly with the MCC U.S./MCC Canada joint ministry council and other internal leadership groups that manage the Canada/US shared responsibility for International program
- Lead monthly meetings of the Canadian Provincial Executive Directors
- Ensure effective collaboration and trust, including regular consultation, with the MCC U.S. Executive Director as well as 2x2 meetings which includes MCC Canada and MCC US board chairs
- Build tolerance and act as a change agent throughout the organization
- Travel within Canada and the United States (i.e., annual attendance at Provincial MCC board meetings, and engagement with provincial staff, national Anabaptist annual gatherings, meet regularly with MCCC staff in Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ottawa offices, spend time with MCCC colleagues in Winnipeg office, assist with orientations and connect with MCC U.S. colleagues in Akron regularly)
- Travel internationally at least twice annually to thank and encourage various MCC staff, and local partners, and to better understand the work of MCC. Participate actively in networks, commissions, general council and global assembly of Mennonite World Conference
- Meet twice annually with the Canadian Council of Anabaptist Leaders (CCAL) and regularly attend their denominational gatherings or arrange for a delegate to attend
- Represent MCC Canada on the Board of Directors or Council of Members of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank
- Regularly be available in person in Ottawa to engage in advocacy and public policy with coalitions and federal ministries
- Take an active role in national associations and coalitions in which MCC is a member
- Consult regularly with the Board Chair and the Moderator of the MCC Canada Delegate Assembly and assist the MCC Canada Board and the MCC Canada Delegate Assembly in their governance responsibilities
- Lead in the creation of meeting packages that provide excellent material for board and committee governance
- Facilitate the process to create, edit and approve Board and staff policies, as needed
- Ensure that adequate plans are in place for strategic direction, budget development and income generation

Contact/Relationships: The Executive Director serves as the Chief Executive Officer for Mennonite Central Committee Canada and represents the vision, values, mission and strategic direction of the Canada Board throughout the organization. The Executive Director cultivates relationships among International Program, provincial and U.S. MCCs, with leaders of constituent national denominations, conferences and partner agencies or organizations. The Executive Director is expected to provide overall leadership to the relief, development and peace building work of MCC, to be in relationship with the primary and secondary MCC stakeholders and to embody the voice of the organization, both internally and externally with national media and national government officials.
Supervision: The Executive Director is accountable to the MCC Canada Board and works in close collaboration with the MCC Canada Board Chair. The Executive Director supervises the directors of international program, national program, human resources, finance and administration, communications and donor relations, and an executive assistant.
Complexity/Competencies: The Executive Director will lead the board and staff in creative and innovative implementation of the identity, purpose vision, priorities, approaches, and values of MCC as set forth in the “Principles and Practices” document developed during MCC’s New Wine New Wineskins revisioning. The Executive Director will also provide leadership in carrying out the long range plans developed by MCC periodically, while being attentive to the commitments set forth in the MCC’s in Canada Covenant, and the MCC Canada/MCC U.S. Covenant. This person establishes strong working relationships with Provincial MCC Executive Directors and Canadian provincial MCC boards and staff to enhance and enrich the mission of MCC Canada.
The Executive Director develops strong relationships with constituent denominations and conferences and creates new partnerships with national and international-level organizations and agencies. The Executive Director will build and empower a senior leadership team in exercising strategic leadership and in understanding the financial realities which MCC faces. The Executive Director will initiate and manage change and will communicate effectively through listening, writing and speaking, and relying on intercultural competencies. The Executive Director will provide oversight, direction and leadership of international program in collaboration with MCC US Executive Director. This position is responsible for the oversight of the financial management of a large and complex charitable organization.
Independent Action: The Executive Director can exercise a high level of independent action and decision-making to meet the goals of the MCC Canada Board. The Executive Director uses innovative and creative approaches to implement and evaluate organizational goals, exercising prudence and good judgment in consultation with the Board Chair on any issue that could jeopardize the organization’s well-being. Performance is measured over long intervals and in terms of substantial impact on the organization.
Initiative and Ingenuity: The Executive Director will need to demonstrate initiative in building and strengthening relationships with conference leaders, especially during times of transition to ensure that there is a strong understanding when changes are made in policy or frameworks. Demonstrating new approaches will need to be developed to reach new audiences, especially younger segments.
Communication/Interpersonal Skills: The Executive Director will be skilled in written and verbal communication in both small and large group settings. Meetings with conference leaders, and other Mennonite/BIC representatives will require an ability to communicate MCCs mission and values and connect these to biblical truths. Listening skills are especially important to address concerns that may be voiced by constituents and particularly denominational leaders.
Must be able to communicate and participates as required to all levels of audience – Canadian Council of Anabaptist Leaders (CCAL), MCCC Board of Directors, Mennonite World Conference (MWC), partners, donors, constituency and staff.
Mental/Physical/Visual Demand: The Executive Director will be a natural leader with a balanced and patient outlook. They will be trustworthy, humble, approachable, and engaging, able to function in demanding physical settings (significant travel), balancing multiple pressures and varied interests given MCC’s diverse constituencies.
End Result: Actions and decisions positively impact organization-wide program and operations. National and international staff vigorously implement the goals and priorities of the Canada Board to accomplish MCC’s mission. Partnership with MCC U.S. is strong. Provincial Boards and staff align themselves with mutually agreed upon goals and commitments. Constituent denominational bodies increase their participation and engagement in shared goals and programs.
