The Sr. Project Accountant effectively communicates and collaborates with the Project team, maintaining a portfolio of projects through the project life cycle, including contract documents, change orders, approvals and any additional services related to billings. This role investigates variances and ensures the efficiency of project billings to customers and receivables.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide project accounting expertise, training and oversight to the project management team through the financial lifecycle of a project; from setup, monitoring, updating and closure.
  • Provide comprehensive financial reporting and monthly updates to senior management of current project.
  • Lead the financial review for projects to ensure compliance with accounting standards and corporate policies.
  • Open, create and maintain projects' revenue and cost budgets, including contracts and change orders in Microsoft D365, maintaining project-related records with accuracy.
  • Ensure timely recording of all cost and revenue transactions.
  • Investigate, prepare and analyze project variances and submit variance reports to management.
  • Prepare project related financial reports and report on project profitability to management.
  • Authorize access to project accounts.
  • Authorize the transfer of expenses into and out of project-related accounts.
  • Review and approve supplier invoices related to a project.
  • Review the timesheets related to accuracy and audit of project costing.
  • Review and approve overhead charges to be applied to a project.
  • Review account totals related to project assets and expenses.
  • Confer with receivables staff regarding unpaid contract billings.
  • Report to management on any opportunities for additional billings.
  • Report to management regarding the remaining funding available for projects.
  • Create or approve all project-related billings to customers.
  • Investigate all project expenses not billed to customers.
  • Respond to requests for more detail from customers.
  • Approve the write-off of any project-related billings that cannot be billed to or collected from customers.
  • Close out project accounts upon project completion.
  • Create and submit government reports and tax returns related to projects.
  • Compile information for internal and external auditors, as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent, with at least five years of experience in project-based accounting.
  • Champions integrity and trust, strong work-ethics and able to multi-task and manage multiple priorities.
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles and policies.
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated professional judgment and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build strong relationships at all levels and across teams as a trusted advisor, with strong self-awareness.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite, such as Excel, Word, Outlook and Microsoft D365.
  • Self-motivated with a positive attitude and attention to detail.
  • Strong strategic orientation coupled with problem-solving and analytical skills.
