Today, OSI Maritime Systems is a leading provider of integrated navigation and tactical solutions designed for naval and maritime security operations. Among those solutions, the company develops and delivers integrated bridge systems for warships, integrated dived navigation systems for submarines, and C2 systems for small craft. Presently, 23 navies totaling more than 600 warships and submarines operate using OSI systems. Due to the nature of our company, all employees must pass specific security criteria.

The Role
The Mechanical Engineer is part of the engineering team that develops marine navigation and bridge systems for OSI’s government and naval markets that offer market leading performance and reliability, minimize production costs and are maintainable over an extended lifecycle. The Mechanical Engineer designs, selects, evaluates and documents mechanical components and their interconnection within the bridge systems. This role will be a part of the growth of our new German office in Kiel.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Performs studies, experiments, research and tests in contributing to the design and development of navigation and bridge system products to established codes, standards, drawings, specifications and customer requirements, for both commercial and military customers.
  2. Creates and updates mechanical designs based on COTS, military grade products and customized solutions which includes the design and specification of parts and components.
  3. Assist with writing and maintaining Company’s mechanical engineering standards and best practices.
  4. Trains and mentors Junior Mechanical Engineers on Company’s mechanical standards and best practices.
  5. Updates and maintains the Company’s parts database.
  6. Reviews hardware requirements, produces hardware design documents, ensuring the proposed solution meets the stated requirements.
  7. Creates mechanical designs and provides information to CAD team members for drawing production.
  8. Reviews designs for adherence to industry and government standards.
  9. Prepares written plans, calculations, designs, specifications and material lists.
  10. Carries out technical tasks requiring accuracy of calculations, completeness of data and adherence to prescribed methods.
  11. Interprets and analyzes design data in preparing feasibility studies and prepares reports for assigned work, resolving technical problems within the scope of the assignment.
  12. Provides design information and guidance to support personnel, and occasionally to suppliers, in preparation of detailed design, design testing and prototype fabrication.
  13. Ensures that the resulting design meets system, customer and budgetary requirements and is compliant to industry and government standards.
  14. Clearly communicates technical and design solutions to other departments.
  15. Executes engineering change request (CRs) as well as providing supporting justification data.
  16. Follows workplace operating and environmental, health and safety procedures and guidelines.

You Bring

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field plus 5+ years of practical mechanical engineering experience.
  2. Experience with mechanical design and design for manufacturing.
  3. Experience with vibration, shock, thermal, and structural analysis (FEA and MathCAD).
  4. Working knowledge of product certification testing to civilian and military standards.
  5. Proven ability to analyze and solve hardware problems.
  6. Experience with SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  7. Experience with MS Office Suite and SharePoint.
  8. Working knowledge of peripheral equipment, test, diagnostic and measuring equipment.
  9. Ability to thrive as a member of a Project team.
  10. Organized, able to handle multiple projects and prioritize workload.
  11. Working knowledge of certification to standards – knowledge of Shipbuilding codes an asset - for example: Lloyds Rules.
  12. Ability to design in a strategic manner taking into consideration reliability, ease of manufacture, and cost.
