Our client is a multi-disciplinary engineering firm, offering services related to structural, environmental, forensics, fire investigations, mechanical, & building science engineering. We are looking for a Field Technician to join their Forensic Investigation department.


This individual will lead and/or assist in conducting on-site assessments to determine the origin and cause of fires and explosions. The technician will follow established fire investigation methodologies (NFPA 1033 and 921) and be involved in identifying, preserving, and collecting evidence on-site, as well as conducting examinations in a controlled laboratory setting. We are looking for someone with industry experience in a similar role, with the ability to lead and handle a file on their own end to end.


Responsibilities:

  • Assist in on-site assessments and analyses of properties affected by fire, explosion, mechanical, and structural failures.
  • Liaise with stakeholders such as public safety officials, police, fire departments, insurance companies, lawyers, media, and the general public under supervision.
  • Convey technical information, including the application of legislation or fire investigation findings, to stakeholders under guidance.
  • Execute research and assist in collecting data and evidence to support investigative findings.
  • Support in determining the origin and cause of fires/explosions and the root cause of failures.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and documentation of investigative files.
  • Assist in conducting interviews with homeowners, witnesses, police or fire department staff, laboratory technicians, etc.
  • Participate in joint investigations with outside agencies and parties under supervision.
  • Maintain continued communication of the investigative file's progression and key deliverables with clients, contractors, and in-house staff.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of working experience in forensic investigation.
  • Relevant certifications such as CFI, CFEI, CFII, CVFI, F-IAFI, WETT are an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of fire investigation methods, strategies, techniques, and theories.
  • Familiarity with investigating explosion scenes and determining the cause and origin of fires.
  • Understanding of fire dynamics, combustion chemistry, and scientific/technical principles (e.g., flash points, vapor density, ignition temperatures).
  • Ability to manage small projects with coordination of information from various disciplines.
  • Basic knowledge of court proceedings, including criminal investigations and rules of evidence, to gather evidence and provide support in expert testimony.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Analytical skills to assist in quantifying damages and determining causes of loss.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including databases, word processing, and spreadsheets.
  • Effective project and time management skills to prepare reports and communicate with staff and clients.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
