Position Scope
Reporting to the Director, IP, the Patent Specialist contributes to the development and support of CE’s intellectual property portfolio. You will contribute to developing the IP strategy as CE’s business grows and expands.
You are the inventor interface for the development of invention disclosure forms (IDFs) and patent applications, you contribute significantly to drafting and prosecution activities, and provide IP awareness and support of all IP activities within CE. You will research, analyze and present IP landscape or related technical results to internal Senior Management and/or external parties and partner with the Legal, Technical, Commercial and Business Development teams to prepare technical reports for CE’s IP development and licensing requirements. These IP activities include, IP training seminars.
This position requires the candidate to be onsite at our Innovation Centre based in Squamish, BC at least three days per week. There is flexibility to WFH two days per week based on business needs. CE offers a flexible work schedule to promote a work-life balance.
Responsibilities
You will be part of an experienced & talented IP team, supporting the Director, IP with:
- Main interface with inventors for invention disclosure activities
- Drafting patent applications
- Reviewing and preparing office action responses
- Managing intellectual property assets
- Corresponding with external IP counsel on patent & trademark matters
- Review of IP sensitive disclosure material
- Updating, execution of IP Protocols and training
- Review of IP provisions within various contracts/agreements
- Technology and IP document control
- Interdepartmental dissemination of technical info including TEA, IP analytics and technology licensing data
- Project Management of internal and external projects relating to the above technical fields
- Supporting Legal and Technical teams with IP and Confidentiality provisions associated with NDAs, contracts, licensing and government funding activities
Technical
- Technical Analysis, Writing and Presentations of:
- Patents - including but not limited to drafting, and prosecution
- Freedom to Operate activities
- Patent Infringement and Validity activities
- Creation and management of technical documentation for:
- Patent Landscape Analysis
- Techno Economic Analysis (TEA)
- Technology licensing updates and reports
- IDFs and patent applications
- Due diligence activities
Education and Experience
Education:
- BASc/BEng degree in Engineering or Equivalent Experience
Experience:
- 5 to 7 year’s work experience in a mechanical or chemical field
- Expertise in patent drafting for filing in USA and Canada preferred
- Ability to distill complex problems into simple solutions
- Experience working directly with inventors to distill inventions into patent applications
- Ability to collaborate in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team environment; including the ability to effectively communicate and navigate through the interfaces between technical, business, legal and administrative teams

Offers and Benefits
Carbon Engineering offers a competitive compensation package including extended health benefits. Base Salary for an Intermediate level role is $93,330 to $122,000 with additional bonus pay.
