Position Overview
We are looking for candidates with a passion for cities and real estate development, with strong research and communication skills. The position of Development Planner will report to MXD’s senior staff members and will be responsible for a various tasks including:
• Gathering and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data (Real Estate, Economic, and Planning) and providing recommendations based on the research.
• Reviewing municipal and regional planning and economic development policies and documents.
• Performing real estate market analysis.
• Providing inputs into financial pro forma analysis.
• Gathering inputs to inform strategic decision making.
• Preparing case study and best practice research.
• General land use planning.
• Conducting stakeholder engagement.
• Providing strategic advisory recommendations based on analysis, stakeholder input, and client vision.
• Providing implementation and incentive recommendations.
• Summarizing research and data into visual and detailed presentations and consulting reports.
• Effectively collaborating with other staff to solve complex problems and bring new ideas to the table.
• Conducting site visits and fieldwork as needed throughout assignments.
• Participating in day-to-day project management, communication and professional development.
• Supporting senior staff in the preparation of proposals and marketing materials.
• Participating in conferences and events, from time-to-time; and,
• Participating in internal meetings, as well as client meetings, workshops, and presentations.
The successful candidate will have the following:
• The ideal candidate brings a minimum of two (2) years experience in the fields of real estate development, urban planning, and/or urban land economics. An understanding of urban planning, development, and real estate terminology and concepts is essential. Previous experience in consulting would be an asset.
• A university degree in urban planning, urban land economics, or development, or a similarly related field. A Master’s degree is preferred, but not required.
Expertise
• Strong understanding of land use planning fundamentals.
• Experience with stakeholder and community consultation.
• Ability to perform real estate and economic market research.
• General understanding of real estate metrics such as absorption, lease rates, cap rates, etc.
• Ability to work independently on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Highly organized and ability to perform tasks efficiently with an attention to detail.
• Time management and prioritization skills.
• Ability to prepare detailed and complex reports and presentations with guidance from senior staff.
• Ability to coordinate between clients, Consultants, Architects, Urban Designers and Civil Engineers.
• Effective written and verbal communications skills with the ability to generate consensus amongst various groups.
• Experience with project management is an asset.
Technical Skills
• Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook;
• Microsoft Enterprise, including SharePoint and Teams
• QGIS (preferred)
• Adobe Suite (preferred)
• Video conference software, including Teams, Zoom, and Skype
