Design Manager

Old Toronto Ontario, CA Chanel, Inc. Full time

Contract: Full-time and Temporary until September 2025

Your role @ Chanel:

Reporting to the Senior Design Manager, your role will be to lead all phases of design coordination, construction project management, procurement, and financial reporting for new Fashion boutique projects within Canada. You will demonstrate absolute command of the brand’s image in-store, adhere to global corporate guidelines, and help to highlight key local opportunities for the Canadian market.

What impact you can create at Chanel:

Management of Design Process

  1. Project management and execution for new Fashion boutique builds throughout all phases.
  2. Be responsible for the local adaptation and drawings received from the UK region Store Planning team.
  3. Design and coordinate all back of house stockrooms and operational spaces.
  4. Prepare full working/construction drawing packages for permit, tender, and construction with local architect and engineers.
  5. Work closely with cross-functional teams to understand their needs and implement operational requirements into the design.
  6. Prepare the planning, budgeting, and forecasting of new builds and review with the Head of Store Planning and the CFO.
  7. In collaboration with the Head of Store Planning, perform site visits to ensure standards are maintained and highlight future opportunities (space, merchandising, competitors, etc.).
  8. Present design intent drawings to receive alignment from key members of the management team.
  9. Once design intent is agreed upon, produce proposed finished illustrations in a timely manner.
  10. Gain relevant approval for proposed design and ensure subsequent detailing, specification, and overall project management is of the highest standard.
  11. Update the Project Critical Path, ensuring that the design is both on time and on budget.
  12. Manage and ensure rapid and efficient work output.
  13. Responsible for managing, reviewing, and implementing the design of audio-visual, security, information technology, lighting, and RFID, with a thorough understanding of all fields.
  14. Work with the landlord’s store design team and negotiate the best outcomes for the brand.
  15. Ensure the landlord’s handover conditions meet brand standards and execute lease documents.
  16. Select and award general contractors, suppliers, and consultant teams.
  17. Lead walkthroughs on the construction site with external and internal team members as required.
  18. Identify discrepancies between approved drawings and site conditions, finding resolutions for such variances to not affect timeline and budget.
  19. Issue status reports to regional and local teams during the construction process.
  20. Inspect quality of all finishes, furniture, materials, and products that arrive on site, working with suppliers on replacements if required.

Management of Shop Fitters and Installation

  1. Effectively manage the chosen shop fitters to ensure timely and high-quality installation of CHANEL branded millwork.
  2. Review and approve shop drawings.
  3. Inspect all sites before and during the design of each project as necessary and conduct in-person shop reviews of millwork within two weeks of installation on site.
  4. Ensure timely and appropriate delivery to site of all necessary components for installation and timely distribution of relevant drawings to Merchandising Manager, Display Representatives, and other relevant parties.

Administrative and Procurement

  1. In collaboration with the Head of Store Planning and the CFO, ensure all design briefs work within agreed budgets.
  2. Manage and code incoming and outgoing invoices and payments related to each project efficiently and accurately, in conjunction with other team members.
  3. Write POs and issue them to vendors, track invoices, and coordinate with finance for payment.
  4. Work with the legal team to coordinate working visas for international workers as required.
  5. Manage directly procured product shipments from various suppliers, working with customs agents to clear goods at the border and arrange for delivery of goods from the border to a local storage facility or construction site.
  6. Ensure negotiated quotes with suppliers are of the best value and quality.
  7. Adhere to the brand’s global procurement policy, green guidelines, and sustainability efforts.

What you will bring to the role:

  1. Minimum of 10+ years retail store design experience on client or agency side.
  2. Degree in Interior Design or Architecture is preferred; on-site luxury retail construction management experience may be acceptable in lieu of the former degrees.
  3. Strong comprehension of architectural and engineering drawings (required).
  4. Confidence and practical understanding of a construction site (required).
  5. PMP designation or LEED accreditation is an asset.
  6. Use of AutoCAD is mandatory.
  7. Use of SketchUp, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Excel is an asset.
  8. Experience with COUPA is an asset.
  9. Ability to travel.

At Chanel, we are focused on creating an inclusive culture that nurtures personal growth, contributing to collective progress. We believe the uniqueness of each individual increases the diversity, complementarity, and effectiveness of our teams. We strongly encourage your application, as we value the perspective, experience, and potential you could bring to CHANEL.
