Director of Nursing and Personal Care ("DOC")

Plan A Simcoe is looking for a DOC for a 3-4 month contract for one of their LTC partners in the Barrie area. Please read the below job description for more detail.

Position Summary:

The Director of Nursing and Personal Care (DOC) is responsible for guiding a team of dedicated long-term care or retirement home professionals in striving to provide the ultimate nursing care experience by leading, mentoring, and supporting a team to work together to achieve this goal. The DOC is responsible for providing leadership, coaching and guidance to assist the nursing team in performing their duties. Ensuring all services provided are in accordance with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 or the Retirement Homes Act, 2010, Plan A's policies and procedures and evidence-based practice. The DOC promotes a culture of inclusion, high performance, and continuous improvement that values agility and commitment to quality.

Key Responsibilities:

Demonstrate and provide leadership in cultivating an engaged and positive workplace culture as a strategy to support the achievement of Plan A's goals and objectives.

Direct the implementation and review of relevant company policies, procedures and processes required to meet government legislation and industry standards.

Ensure that Resident Care Services, including annual goals and objectives for the Nursing department, align with Plan A's vision, mission, and values.

Monitor the quality of nursing services and administer long term strategic plans for nursing.

Plan, coordinate, direct, and monitor the effectiveness of all operational activities within the nursing department.

Lead and support the recruitment, training, performance, evaluation, discipline, termination, scheduling and ongoing supervision, leadership, coaching and mentoring of the nursing team (RN, RPN, PSW, etc.). Ensure adherence with current Plan A policies and procedures as it relates to human resource management and performance, infection prevention and control, financial management, health and safety and resident care program/services policies, procedures, and protocols.

Ensure there is a Human Resource strategy that supports staff development and recognition. Ensure there is a healthy and safe work environment for all staff while promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion practices.

Ensure the risk management process is adhered to by reviewing staff and resident incident reports, monthly indicators, Public Health inspections, Ministry of Labour inspections, Ministry of Health inspections, Accreditation reports, etc. Prepare, implement, and oversee quality action plans for nursing.

Lead quality improvement and risk management activities using evidence-based best practices.

Ensure appropriate documentation and maintenance of records, including resident health records, personnel records, etc.

Delegate clinical and managerial responsibilities as well as provide direction and leadership.

Provide support for front-line resident care by assisting with medication administration, and clinical treatments as necessary.

Assist with the development of succession plans and identify employees with growth potential for development.

Ensure Nursing policies and procedures are implemented to meet best practice guidelines and are evidence informed.

Promote a resident-centred care approach that engages residents, families, and team members to deliver care that meets individual resident needs.

Review and approve long-term care policies, procedures, and protocols at least every three years or when changes to evidence or professional accountabilities and/or legislative requirements.

Ensure all registered team members provide appropriate documentation of registration and continued learning at least annually; ensure a proper tracking and record system for all team member credentials.

Ensure all program evaluations and performance appraisals are completed as required

Models and fosters an environment of positive customer service in all aspects of care

Develop and monitor budgets and financials, accountability for the formulation, administration, and monitoring of the annual nursing budget. Authorize expenditures within budgetary guidelines and as approved by Administrator.

Maintain a balanced budget, ensuring that resources are appropriately deployed, efficiencies realized, and revenues optimized. Seek opportunities to reduce costs.

Ensure all incidents considered as written complaints and critical incidents are reported within the required timeframe, including reporting to the Executive team. Ensure all regulatory requirements are met, including the record keeping of all investigation documents.

Responsible for investigating resident/family concerns per the legislative requirements and Plan A's operational policies and procedures and liaises to assist in problem resolution.

Support and promote research initiatives related to senior care.

Work to advance and advocate senior needs through participation on external committees, such as MOLTC, LHIN, Ontario Health Team, Advantage Ontario, OLTCA, Alliance Networks, OCSA, etc.

Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, and Regional and Provincial standards.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

A Bachelor of Science degree or diploma in Nursing required.

Current registration with CNO required.

Administrator Leadership Program certificate is an asset.

Bilingualism is an asset.

A minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership and management responsibility, which includes two-five (2-5) years supervisory experience in the long-term care sector.

Demonstrate a transformative, innovative and servant leadership style.

Effectively support the RAI/MDS program and Case Mix Index (CMI)

Working knowledge of internal Behaviour Supports Ontario (BSO) programs.

Working knowledge of applying a collective agreement within a unionized environment

Progressive leadership experience with a successful track record in a client-focused and complex multi-stakeholder and partner environment

Extensive knowledge of the Fixing Long-Term Care Homes Act (2021) or Retirement Homes Act, 2010, Standards and Best Practices of the College of Nurses of Ontario,

Regulated Health Professionals Act, Substitute Decisions and Consent to Treatment Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act and all other relevant legislation preferred.

Strong problem-solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to foster collaboration, teamwork, and the ability to work with a diverse population as the leader.

Highly developed interpersonal, public, labour, and human relations skills to build and maintain effective relations and partnerships with all stakeholders.

Demonstrated commitment to our core values.

Proven experience as a Lead for quality improvement initiative successes

Clear Tuberculosis testing within the last two years; Steps 1 & 2; or an X-Ray from the previous five years showing a clear result.

Proof of a COVID-19 vaccination series approved by Health Canada.

Proof of current flu immunization.

Provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one.

Provide and maintain current CPR certificate for the duration of employment.

Job Type: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 3-4 months

Pay: $70.00 per hour
