THE MUSEUMS


The Canadian Museum of History oversees the operation of two critically important Canadian museums: the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum.

The corporation's overall mandate is to enhance Canadians' knowledge, understanding and appreciation of events, experiences, people and objects that reflect and have shaped Canada's history and identity, and also to enhance their awareness of world history and cultures.

With its iconic Museum buildings perfectly located on both sides of the Ottawa River, the Museums welcomed over 1.7 million visitors in 2019 (pre-pandemic) making it the country's most-visited museum institutions.

With roots stretching back to 1856, it is one of Canada's oldest public institutions and a respected centre of museological excellence, sharing its expertise in history, archaeology, ethnology and cultural studies both within Canada and abroad.


The Canadian Museum of History is a Crown Corporation, and its administration is governed by a unique set of Acts and Regulations, such as the Financial Administration Act (FAA) and alignment with Treasury board guidelines.

Consequently, the CFO and VP of Finance and Infrastructure ("CFO") is accountable, with the CEO, the Board of Trustees and senior leadership, for proposing a values-based framework of policies, rules, principles, and accountabilities, that reflect the continuing evolution of management practices.


THE OPPORTUNITY


The CFO and VP of Finance and Infrastructure ("CFO") oversees all financial, procurement, facilities, and information systems for the Museums and ensures the accurate reporting of financial and payroll data, systems operations.

Ensures these activities reflect the vision and strategic direction of the Board of Trustees and achieves its mission through the management of key resources, the development and implementation of short and long-term financial strategies, and the support of all core activities.

Acts as a strategic advisor to the CEO and Board of Trustees.


The CFO is responsible for developing and cultivating strong relationships with all stakeholders including the Board's Finance and Audit Committee, and the Office of the Auditor General.

The incumbent ensures compliance with relevant legislation such as the Financial Administrations Act and the Museums Act and monitors and leads all proactive disclosures meeting the expectations of various stakeholders.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leading the finance, procurement, information management and facilities functions, the CFO is responsible for:

  • Setting the vision, strategy, priorities and appropriate risk tolerance levels for the finance function, within the overall strategy and priorities and financial needs identified across the Museums.
  • Championing and leading critical change and a new collaborative, forwardthinking culture within the finance and other functions, and working with others to achieve this across the Museums.
  • Developing diverse, multicultural teams, and agile teams, within flexible team structures and work environment, which stays at the forefront of innovation.
  • Championing, promoting, and encouraging all team members to contribute to a productive, collaborative, diverse and inclusive working environment and culture of accountability, service delivery excellence and working in diverse markets.
  • Providing direction, mentorship, and career development opportunities to the team while ensuring a positive employee experience. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, identify inefficient operations and offer recommendations on how to improve them, through modernized systems and processes.

Direct the planning, development, management, evaluation and control of all Museum financial systems and activities:

  • Promoting and driving innovation and continuous improvement throughout the finance and other functions and across the Museums.
  • Providing finance expertise and support to the CEO and senior executives on all financial planning, reporting, and control initiatives, services, risks and issues.
  • Providing strategic expertise/support directly to the CEO on confidential and board level financial matters.
  • Ensure financial control, analysis and accurate reporting of all financial data. Oversee the preparation and approval of the Museums' financial statements. Direct and manage external financial audits and provide financial reports to senior leadership. Act as the liaison with the external auditor for all financial audits.
