Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Ocean Wise Full time

_Taking action for the ocean today, so we can all flourish._

Ocean Wise is the world-class ocean change maker for concerned collaborators; big and small who want practical solutions with real impact so that they feel empowered and take action to protect oceans, humanity, and the world we live in.

ROLE OVERVIEW
Ocean Wise is a globally focused conservation organization on a mission to protect and restore the world's oceans. Through research, education, direct-action conservation and field projects, we empower communities to take action for ocean health.

We're focused on tackling three major ocean challenges:
overfishing, ocean pollution and climate change. Ocean Wise is headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia with staff across Canada and initiatives around world.

We deliver our work through five initiatives:
Plastics & Pollution, Fisheries & Seafood, Seaforestation, Youth, and Whales.

The Whales Initiative is one of the conservation programs within Ocean Wise and consists of two pillars: The Ocean Wise Sightings Network (OWSN) and the Cetacean Health & Monitoring Program.

The OWSN collects sightings of whales, dolphins, porpoises, and sea turtles from mariners and coastal citizens in British Columbia (BC) and Washington State waters.

This pillar also promotes the conservation of these species through outreach and education, including presentations, information booths, brochures/posters, blogs/newsletters, and educational signage.

Working closely with marine industry, the OWSN aims to implement programs and technology to decrease cetacean-vessel strike risk and disturbance.

One of its principal activities is the continued enhancement and expansion of the WhaleReport Alert System (WRAS).

The WRAS uses real-time sightings reported to the OWSN through the WhaleReport app, automatic acoustic detections from hydrophones and infrared cameras, and observations from partner sightings networks to inform large commercial vessels of whales in their vicinity so that they may take mitigation measures to reduce vessel-associated impacts.

The WRAS Coordinator position will
predominately support the WRAS project within the Ocean Wise Sightings Network pillar by providing scientific expertise, analytical insights, and programme management support.

The role will be reporting to the Manager, WRAS, and will work closely with Senior Manager, Whales, as well as other facets of the team in supporting role where necessary.

The role is estimated to be ~40% analytical and data visualization tasks, ~30% conservation program support and planning (stakeholder engagement, strategy, etc), and 30% on all other supportive duties within the Whales Initiative (outreach, internal collaborations, website/communication material development).

KEY ROLES

  • Assists in the design, review, and delivery of conservation projects across the initiative.
  • Conducts analysis and data visualization to support a variety of needs within the OWSN team including communication to existing/potential funders, scientific publications, and communication material for the public.
  • Cocreates conservation interventions and schedules to meet or exceed programmatic deliverables stipulated in funding agreements.
- in coordination with the Director, Senior Manager, and WRAS Manager. Provides relevant conservation-based information to funding proposals and pitches and supports the WRAS Manager and Senior Manager in preparing presentations for prospect partners and donors.

  • Conduct media interviews (e.g., radio/television/print articles), give public lectures or similar activities to motivate uptake of the WRAS and promote industry best practices/behavioral changes in support of whale conservation.
  • Assists with the publishing of findings in peerreviewed journals, as relevant, and presenting them at scientific and/or other pertinent conferences.
  • Collaborates with other Ocean Wise Conservation Initiatives as it pertains to project synergies and sharing of conservation tools.

Specific duties to support the Whale Report Alert System project

  • Develops reproducible analysis and data visualizations to support project communications, publications, and success tracking.
  • Supports engagement with potential new data providers (hydrophone, infrared camera, or other) to expand the effectiveness of the WRAS.
  • Supports the WRAS Manager Senior Manager, and Director of Whales to expand the use of WRAS to new users and geographies.
  • Support the Manager, WRAS, in projects relating to assessing the efficacy of the Whale Report Alert System as well as improving dissemination of data to mariner groups.
  • Maintains resources related to training, tools, and research.

Contributes to cetacean applied research in the Whales Initiative by:
