Under general direction, the Charge Hand Custodial/Housekeeping assists the Supervisor of Custodial/Housekeeping Services with the delivery and supervision of the day to day cleaning activities.

The Charge Hand provides support to the Supervisor regarding operational issues, standards, safety and potential improvements as well an ensuring the communication and implementation of safety policies and procedures with all regular and casual employees.

The Charge Hand participates in special projects and other duties of a similar scope and complexity related to the Custodial and Housekeeping Services.

The Charge Hand will at times assist physically with the work in order to ensure meeting operational needs.

To be successful in this position the individual must be able to manage conflict and direct the team in a fair and consistent manner.

At times, may be required to meet the operational needs of the university including working in extreme weather conditions or assisting with other teams.

    Qualifications


Grade 12 graduation from a secondary school, or equivalent, plus three (3) years recent experience in an institutional or similar environment performing duties related to the position, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Must have excellent and current knowledge of custodial equipment, chemicals and cleaning processes.
Proven ability to organize, assign, distribute and check work of the Custodial and Housekeeping staff.
Must have and demonstrate effective communication skills.
Demonstrated commitment to customer service excellence.
Experience and knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and the use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
Possession of a valid Class 5 driver's license in the province of BC.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to provide effective leadership, plan and prioritize work schedules and assignments for various service unit staff.
Proven ability to direct and lead a custodial team by fostering a respectful positive solution-based culture
Knowledge of Worksafe BC requirements and associated provincial regulations.
Knowledge and ability to use equipment, materials and techniques related to the duties.
Ability to use MS Word and Excel.

Preferred:

Two (2) to three (3) years recent supervisory experience
Management skills for Supervisors Certificate or equivalent formal supervisory training preferred.
