We are currently seeking to fill the position of: Sunshine Garden Peer Assistant

This position is only open to those who are current or past participants of the Sunshine Garden.

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Assist with garden maintenance, which includes, but is not limited to, pruning, weeding, watering, seedling starting, harvesting, mulching, and turning over soil.
  • Support with creating a welcoming environment for volunteers, mentoring gardening volunteers, interacting with the public, giving garden tours, and potentially speaking at events/with the media about the garden.
  • Engage with volunteers in various gardenrelated tasks, imparting wisdom about the garden to volunteers whenever possible
  • Assist in facilitation of communitybased workshops
  • Support with the distribution of garden produce from the CAMH site at a biweekly market stand, through cooking programs, and in takehome packages for volunteers
  • Participate in FoodShare staff and team meetings, all staff training, board staff retreat and reporting requirements such as timesheets and handle other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • Must be or have been a participant at the Sunshine Garden
  • People skills, i.e. helping people feel welcomed and valued, energizing groups, communicating instructions
  • Communication skills, i.e. able to understand verbal instructions in order to carry out tasks, able to communicate issues you observe and propose solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with people of different ages, genders, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and individuals who have experienced marginalization
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of food justice and antioppression
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to be punctual, reliable, and committed to successfully completion of tasks

Job Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada
  • Lifting and moving up to 40 pounds
  • Working outdoors and on your feet for long periods of time in a variety of weather conditions
  • Complete training to work offer from CAMH

Salary:
$24.00/Hour*
Benefits: daily lunch stipend, 10 paid personal days per year (prorated to contract length), 10 paid sick/wellness days per calendar year, vacation in pay (8%)

Contract Type:
Fixed term, Part-time (15 hours per week, 15 week duration)

Community and Market Gardens Coordinator

Sunshine Garden (1000 Queen Street West)

Selection Process:

  • In recognition of the time and labour of preparing for and attending an interview, FoodShare financially compensates interviewees at a fixed rate of $75 per interview.
