The Ministry has the following responsibilities:

develop curriculum and set standards; evaluate curriculum and assess outcomes; teacher development and certification; support students with diverse learning needs; fund and support school boards; First Nations, Métis and Inuit and Francophone education; and oversees basic education policy and regulations.


The FNMI Division is dedicated to supporting systemic change across the education system to close the achievement gap between First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and non-Indigenous students, and to ensure that all Alberta students are knowledgeable, understanding and respectful of the rich diversity of Indigenous peoples, including their cultures, language and histories; the importance of treaties; and the legacy of Indian Residential Schools.


Role Responsibilities:


This position involves designing, planning, managing and evaluating major projects requiring interaction and consultation/engagement with Ministry, and cross-GoA stakeholders as well as with other levels of government, external interest groups, First Nations and Métis community, school authorities and research groups.

The work of the branch impacts across all levels and sectors of the Provincial and First Nations education systems to impact all Alberta students and teachers as well as a specific focus on support First Nations, Métis and Inuit student success.


  • Leading major policy and program/initiative development projects aimed at supporting strategic direction for First Nations, Métis and Inuit education

This is accomplished by:

  • Providing project management leadership on complex multistakeholder projects that includes developing project charters, work plans with goals, resource allocations and timeframes.
  • Grant management and developing funding guidelines for the implementation of educational programs/initiatives for students and resource/tools for educators.
  • Leading and coordinating the preparation of legislative, regulation, and policy change and program implementation, and all required documentation for approval from Ministry executive.
  • Providing leadership, direction, planning and integration to internal and external project committees to ensure alignment, to leverage knowledge and resources and to deliver successful outcomes

This involves:

  • Leading and determining project success criteria, performance metrics and deliverables including implementation strategies and evaluation.
  • Developing project plans, schedules and frequency and content of project status reports.
  • Identifying data and information needs to support evidencebased and timely policy and program/initiative development, implementation and evaluation.
  • Developing and maintaining effective relationships and strategic alliances with both internal and external stakeholders, stakeholders of interest and stakeholders of influence to promote and ensure shared understanding and responsibility to improve education outcomes for FNMI students

This includes:

  • Leading Division participation on intergovernmental, crossMinistry and GoA committees to reinforce interdisciplinary collaboration and interdependencies in addressing improving education outcomes for Indigenous students as an integrated system.
  • Developing workshops and presentations to promote the Ministry's and GoA's perspective and reputation as a leader in building evidencebased policy, programs and initiatives to close the achievement gap between FNMI) students and nonFNMI students,
  • Leading division participation on local, provincial and national committees/working groups to access and share knowledge, best practices and trends, and to develop provincial approaches to issues in FNMI education stemming from participation in these committees/working groups.
  • Leading the development of an issues management analysis process to provide advice and awareness of issues, trends and challenges that can affect the development of policies, initiatives, and programs

This involves:

  • Assessing and translating the GoA priorities and strategies regarding engagement and commitment to intergovernmental agreements relative to the Division's and Ministry's programs and initiatives.
  • Connecting the intervention strategic commitments to the development of the Ministry's strategic agenda, priority setting and business and operational plans including Division, and Branch plans.
